All three can work for a beginner. The bigger question is which one already has buyers for what you source, and whether reselling suits your time and budget at all; our reselling for profit guide walks through that decision before you pick an app.

Which app lets you keep the most money?

On the same sale, Depop usually leaves the seller the most, Mercari next and Poshmark the least. The gap is widest on mid-priced items and narrows on very cheap ones.

Example (hypothetical): the same item sells on each app, the buyer pays $6 for shipping on Depop and Mercari and that covers your label exactly, and we ignore sales tax to keep the math simple.

$10 item$40 item
Poshmark: fee$2.95$8.00
Poshmark: you keep$7.05$32.00
Depop: 3.3% + $0.45 on item and shipping$0.98$1.97
Depop: you keep$9.02$38.03
Mercari: 10% on item and buyer-paid shipping$1.60$4.60
Mercari: you keep$8.40$35.40

Two cautions before you move everything to Depop. First, buyers on Depop and Mercari pay their own fees on top of the price, and on those apps shipping is part of what the buyer sees, so the same item can look more expensive than on Poshmark. Second, a lower fee is worth nothing if your item doesn't sell there. For the full breakdown of Poshmark's side, including overweight packages and payout fees, see Poshmark fees explained.

Who shops on Depop, Poshmark and Mercari?

The audiences overlap, but each app has a center of gravity. Use these as starting points, then confirm with sold listings for your own items.

  • Depop leans toward younger shoppers looking for vintage, streetwear, Y2K and trend-led fashion. Styled, on-body or flat-lay photos that show the look tend to fit the feed.
  • Poshmark is built around brand-name fashion: mall and contemporary brands, workwear, shoes, handbags and accessories, plus some home goods. Buyers often search by brand and size.
  • Mercari is a general marketplace. Clothing sells there alongside toys, electronics, collectibles and household items, which helps if you source a mix.

The quickest test: search five items you'd typically buy on each app, filter to sold, and count how many similar pieces sold recently and at what price. The app with the most sold comps for your style is your first app.

How different is the day-to-day work?

Each app rewards a different routine, and the effort is real on all three.

Poshmark: social and offer-driven

Poshmark expects activity. Sellers share listings to followers and themed Posh Parties, and send Offer to Likers deals, which must be at least 10% below the current price and include a shipping discount paid from your earnings. Expect to spend some time most days sharing and answering offers. Our guide on how to sell on Poshmark walks through the routine.

Depop: photos and style

On Depop, presentation does much of the work: clear, styled photos and a detailed description of size, fit and era help a listing stand out in the feed. You can pay for Boosted Listings, which cost 12% of the sale price when a boosted listing sells, for new listings from March 2026; if the item sells without the boost, there's no boost fee.

Mercari: list it and wait

Mercari's listing flow is quick, and you choose the shipping option and who pays it. There's less of a social routine, so it suits sellers who'd rather list in batches than share every day. Our beginner's guide on how to sell on Mercari walks through listing, shipping and payouts.

How do shipping and payouts compare?

Shipping is where Poshmark is easiest and payouts are where the apps differ most in timing.

Shipping, as of 2026:

  • Poshmark emails a prepaid USPS label for every sale. The buyer pays a flat $6.49 for up to 5 lb; above that, the seller pays the overweight cost.
  • Depop offers Depop Shipping labels via USPS, fully tracked, or you can ship your own way. If you choose Depop Shipping, you must use the Depop label, or you lose seller protection and the order may be canceled. Orders not shipped within 10 days are canceled automatically.
  • Mercari offers prepaid labels from USPS, UPS and FedEx priced by weight and service. Its fee page lists USPS Ground Advantage at $4.91 for a 0.25 lb package, rising to $5.39 from October 19, 2026 (see our Mercari fees breakdown).

Payouts, as of 2026:

  • Poshmark releases funds within 3 days of delivery unless the buyer opens a case.
  • Depop pays your Depop Balance 2 business days after delivery or 10 business days after the sale, whichever comes first, and withdrawals can take up to 5 days to reach your bank.
  • Mercari releases funds when the buyer rates the order, or automatically after the 72-hour review window. Direct deposit is free; Instant Pay costs $3, once a day, up to $600 a month.

Which app is safer for sellers?

All three protect sellers who stay on the platform and use the platform's label; none protects deals paid outside the app.

  • Depop Protection covers sellers in the US, UK and Australia when an item shipped with a Depop Shipping label within 5 days of the sale is lost or damaged in transit, for sales up to $300 including shipping and tax. Payments by PayPal, Venmo or bank transfer and in-person handovers aren't covered.
  • Poshmark covers the prepaid label if USPS loses the package, reviews "not as described" cases with evidence from both sides, and authenticates orders over $500 before delivery. We cover its protections and the scams to avoid in is Poshmark legit and safe.
  • Mercari covers lost or damaged packages shipped on its prepaid labels and reviews return requests from both sides; we explain the limits in is Mercari legit and safe.

Should you sell on Depop, Poshmark or both?

Start with one, then add another once your process works. A simple way to decide:

  1. Mostly vintage, streetwear or one-off statement pieces? Start on Depop.
  2. Mostly brand-name clothing, shoes and bags, many priced $15 or more? Start on Poshmark, and price with its 20% in mind.
  3. A mix of clothing, toys, electronics and household items? Start on Mercari.
  4. Lots of items under $15? Poshmark's flat $2.95 hurts most there; bundle them or use an app with a percentage fee.

Crosslisting the same item on two or three apps reaches more buyers, but every sale must be delisted everywhere else immediately. Use a simple inventory sheet so you always know where each item is listed.

Frequently asked questions

Is Depop or Poshmark better for beginners?

Poshmark is simpler to ship because the buyer pays a flat label and you don't calculate postage, while Depop keeps more of each sale for you. Pick the one where items like yours have the most recent sold listings.

Does Depop still have no selling fees?

Yes for sellers based in the US, UK and Australia, as of 2026. You still pay a payment processing fee, 3.3% + $0.45 in the US, and a 12% boosting fee on sales that come from Boosted Listings.

Which app has the lowest fees: Depop, Poshmark or Mercari?

For US sellers, Depop usually takes the least, then Mercari at 10%, then Poshmark at 20% on items of $15 or more. Buyer-side fees on Depop and Mercari can make buyers more price-sensitive, so compare net payouts, not just fee rates.

Is Mercari better than Poshmark?

Mercari's 10% fee is lower than Poshmark's 20%, and it sells far more than clothing. Poshmark has a fashion-focused audience and simpler flat-rate shipping, so brand-name clothing often sells well there.

Can I sell the same item on Depop and Poshmark?

Yes, many sellers crosslist. You must remove the listing everywhere else the moment it sells, or you risk selling one item twice and canceling, which hurts your account.
