How to sell on eBay step by step: set up your account and payouts, list and price items, ship, understand 2026 fees, payout holds and the 1099-K rules.

Steps at a glance
- 1Set up your seller account and payouts. Register, verify your identity and link a checking account or debit card so eBay can pay you.
- 2Research sold prices. Search the item and filter for sold listings to see what buyers actually paid recently.
- 3Create the listing. Add a specific title, item specifics, clear photos, an honest description, price and shipping details.
- 4Ship fast with tracking. Pack securely, buy a tracked label and ship within your stated handling time.
- 5Get paid and keep records. Choose a payout schedule, then log each sale with its fees and costs for taxes.
To sell on eBay, create a seller account, link a bank account or debit card for payouts, research what similar items actually sold for, then list with clear photos and accurate details and ship quickly with tracking. Learning how to sell on eBay mostly means learning three things well: pricing from sold listings, eBay's fees, and how and when eBay pays you.
eBay is often the first platform resellers learn because it sells almost every category and has a huge buyer base. This guide walks through setup, listing, shipping, fees, payouts and taxes for US sellers, with notes for other countries, as of 2026.
How do you set up an eBay seller account?
Register on eBay, then complete the seller setup: verify your identity, add your tax information and link a checking account or a Visa or Mastercard debit card so eBay can send your payouts. Until setup is done, you can't list or get paid.
A few decisions to make up front:
- Personal or business account. You can start with a personal account in the US. If you plan to buy items to resell, you'll still need to treat the income as business income for taxes.
- Your tax ID. eBay is required to collect a taxpayer identification number such as an SSN, ITIN or EIN. If you don't provide it, eBay says payouts can be held and backup withholding applied.
- Your payout schedule. Choose daily, weekly, every two weeks or monthly. Daily gets money to you fastest.
Outside the US, rules differ. In the UK, for example, private sellers and business sellers pay different fees, and people who buy items to resell are expected to register as business sellers. Our comparison of the best reselling apps covers the UK differences.
How do you list an item on eBay?
Start from the item's exact name or model number, pick the matching product if eBay suggests one, then fill in photos, item specifics, condition, description, price and shipping. The more complete the listing, the easier it is for buyers to find in search.
1. Photos
You can add up to 24 photos free in most categories. Shoot in good light on a plain background, and show labels, model numbers, measurements and every flaw. The first photo appears next to your title in search results, so make it the clearest one.
2. Title and item specifics
Put the words buyers search for into the title: brand, model, size, color and key feature. Then fill in every item specific eBay offers, such as brand, size and material. Buyers filter by these, and empty fields make your listing harder to find.
3. Condition and description
Choose the correct condition and describe any wear, missing parts or defects plainly. Accurate descriptions are your best defense against "not as described" returns.
4. Price and format
Research sold listings, not active ones, to see what buyers really paid. Then choose a format:
| Format | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Buy It Now (fixed price) | You set the price; the first buyer to pay gets it | Most everyday items |
| Buy It Now with Best Offer | Buyers can send offers; you accept, counter or decline | Items with some price flexibility |
| Auction | Buyers bid until the end time; highest bid wins | Rare, collectible or hard-to-price items with many bidders |

5. Shipping and returns
Weigh and measure the packed item before you set shipping. Decide whether you offer free shipping (built into the price) or charge the buyer, choose a handling time you can reliably meet, and set a return policy.
How much are eBay seller fees in 2026?
For most categories in the US, eBay charges a final value fee of 13.6% of the total amount of the sale up to $7,500, and 2.35% on the portion above, plus a per-order fee of $0.40 for orders over $10 or $0.30 for orders of $10 or less. The total amount includes the item price, shipping and sales tax.
Other fee rules to know, as of 2026, from eBay's official fee page:
| Fee or rule | Amount (US, as of 2026) |
|---|---|
| Free listings | 250 per month |
| Insertion fee after free listings | $0.35 per listing |
| Final value fee, most categories | 13.6% up to $7,500, then 2.35% |
| Books, movies and music | 15.3% up to $7,500 |
| Trading cards and comics | 13.25% |
| Sneakers sold for $150 or more | 8%, no per-order fee |
| International fee | 1.65% when the buyer or delivery address is outside the US |
| Below-standard seller surcharge | Extra 6 percentage points |
| High return rate surcharge | Extra 5 percentage points |
Fees can change, so check eBay's selling fees page before you price a batch.
What does one sale look like after fees?
Example (hypothetical): you sell a used jacket for $25 with free shipping, the buyer pays $2 in sales tax, and your shipping label costs $6.
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Item price (shipping included) | $25.00 |
| Sales tax the buyer pays (goes to the state) | $2.00, not yours |
| Final value fee, 13.6% of $27.00 | −$3.67 |
| Per-order fee (order over $10) | −$0.40 |
| Shipping label | −$6.00 |
| Mailer | −$0.50 |
| You keep before item cost | $14.43 |
The sales tax passes through eBay to the state, but the fee is still calculated on it. Subtract what you paid for the jacket, then weigh the result against the time you spent sourcing, listing and packing it.
How and when does eBay pay sellers?
eBay pays you directly to your linked bank account or debit card. Sales typically show as available for payout about 2 days after the buyer's payment is confirmed, and a payout then usually takes 1 to 3 business days to reach your bank.
- Payout schedule. Daily payouts go out on weekdays; weekly payouts on Tuesdays for the previous week's sales; biweekly every second Tuesday; monthly on the first Tuesday.
- Express payouts. Eligible sellers can pay a flat $2.00 per payout to get funds sent to a debit card or bank account, typically available within 30 minutes, including weekends.
- Holds for new sellers. For new individual sellers, eBay says funds are released within 2 days after delivery confirmation when you use an eBay shipping label, 7 days after delivery confirmation with another tracked label, or 31 days after payment if there's no tracking.
Use tracked labels from day one
Tracked shipping, ideally with eBay's own labels, gets new sellers paid faster and gives you proof of delivery if a buyer says an item never arrived.
What happens if a buyer has a problem?
Buyers are covered by the eBay Money Back Guarantee if an item doesn't arrive or isn't as described. They can generally open a request up to 30 days after the actual or estimated delivery date, or within your return window if that's longer.
To protect yourself:
- Describe and photograph flaws so "not as described" claims are hard to make.
- Ship within your handling time with tracking, and insure high-value items.
- Answer messages quickly and politely; many problems are solved before a case is opened.
- Watch your seller metrics. Late shipments and cases can push you below standard, which raises your fees.
Do you pay taxes on eBay sales?
Yes, if you make a profit. The IRS says you must report income whether or not you receive a Form 1099-K, including gains from selling personal items. eBay sends a Form 1099-K by January 31 when your gross payments exceed $20,000 across more than 200 transactions, the federal threshold reinstated by the One, Big, Beautiful Bill.
- Selling personal items at a loss usually produces no taxable gain, but keep records of what you paid.
- Buying to resell is generally a business. Report profit on Schedule C and deduct costs like inventory, fees, shipping and supplies.
- Sales tax on eBay orders is generally collected and remitted by eBay in US states with marketplace facilitator laws.
- UK, Canada and Australia have their own platform reporting rules; check HMRC, the CRA or the ATO.

Frequently asked questions
How much does eBay take when you sell something?
For most categories in the US, eBay charges 13.6% of the total sale, including shipping and sales tax, up to $7,500, plus a per-order fee of $0.40 for orders over $10 or $0.30 for $10 or less, as of 2026. Some categories, such as books and sneakers, have different rates.
How long does eBay take to pay sellers?
Funds typically become available about 2 days after the buyer's payment is confirmed, then take 1 to 3 business days to reach your bank on a daily payout schedule. New sellers may have funds held until after the item is delivered.
Is it free to list on eBay?
Most sellers get 250 free listings a month in the US. After that, an insertion fee applies per listing, and final value fees apply only when an item sells.
Should I use auction or Buy It Now?
Fixed price with Best Offer suits most everyday items because you control the minimum price. Auctions can work for rare or collectible items with many interested buyers.
Do I need a business account to sell on eBay?
No. In the US you can start with a personal seller account. If you buy items to resell regularly, you should still treat it as a business for taxes, and some sellers switch to a business account later.
