The TikTok Shop return policy in the US gives buyers 30 calendar days from the date an order is marked "Delivered" to request a return and refund, and the seller pays return shipping whenever the item is damaged, defective or wrong, as of 2026. Sellers also have fixed deadlines to respond, and if they miss them, TikTok can approve the request automatically.

For a seller, returns are a cost to plan for before listing, not an admin task to deal with later. This guide covers the time windows, who pays for shipping, the response clocks, refunds without returns, disputes and the UK rules. Buyers looking for their own protections should read whether TikTok Shop is legit and safe instead.

How long do buyers have to return a TikTok Shop order?

The default is 30 calendar days from delivery. Qualified sellers can choose a window of 14, 30, 45 or 90 days in Seller Center, and if you set nothing, 30 days applies.

On top of that window, TikTok runs a Money-Back Guarantee: after the normal return window closes, a buyer can still claim on eligible orders within 90 calendar days of receiving the item. The policy is explicit that if TikTok decides in the buyer's favor, the refund is issued at the seller's cost.

Custom return window14, 30, 45 or 90 daysQualified sellers, set in Seller Center

Some categories are non-returnable in the US: food, beverages, dietary supplements and other ingestible products for people or animals, live plants, seeds and fresh flowers, trading cards and collectibles, pre-owned items, and chemicals and water testing products. A buyer can still raise a problem with a damaged or wrong item. If you're thinking of selling ingestibles, the category has its own approval rules, covered in selling supplements on TikTok Shop.

The US policy page we used was updated on September 28, 2026. TikTok revises it often, so reread it in Seller Center before you set your own window.

Who pays return shipping on TikTok Shop?

It depends on the return reason the buyer selects and how the item goes back. Seller-fault reasons always cost the seller; change-of-mind returns cost the seller when the buyer uses TikTok's preferred drop-off option.

Return reasonBuyer uses TikTok's preferred drop-off logisticsBuyer arranges their own return
Damaged, defective, wrong item, missing partsSeller paysSeller pays
No longer needed, doesn't fit, changed mindSeller paysBuyer pays

That second row is the one many new sellers miss: a change-of-mind return can still cost you a shipping label. Price your products with that in mind, especially in categories where fit or taste drives returns. If you want help building returns into your pricing and product choices from the start, our step-by-step TikTok Shop guide walks through the seller path.

The policy also warns that TikTok Shop can't guarantee the buyer returns the correct item, which is one more reason to keep good records of what you ship.

How fast do sellers have to respond to returns?

Fast. Under the US policy, sellers have 4 business days to review return-and-refund requests, and 2 business days for refund-only requests on items of $100 or less (4 business days above $100). If you take no action, the request can be approved automatically.

What that means in practice:

  • Check requests daily, including Mondays after a weekend of orders.
  • Turn on notifications in Seller Center so requests don't sit unseen.
  • Decide on clear internal rules for common cases, so you don't have to think through each request.

Cancellations have their own short clock. For orders you ship yourself, a buyer can cancel within less than 1 hour of ordering while the order is pending, and canceling orders yourself once they're awaiting shipment counts against your seller-fault cancellation rate.

When does a buyer get a refund without returning the item?

For low-priced items, the refund can come without the product ever coming back. TikTok's US policy automatically enables refund-only for products with a purchase price of up to $10.

Sellers can also set their own refund-without-return rules for their business. That can make sense when return shipping would cost more than the item, or when a returned product couldn't be resold anyway.

Example (hypothetical): you sell a $9 phone grip that costs you $3 to make and $4 to ship. If a buyer reports it as defective, the refund goes out without a return, so you lose the $9 sale and the $7 you already spent. Paying a return label on top would only make it worse, which is the logic behind the threshold.

Can sellers reject or dispute a return?

Yes, within limits. The US policy says TikTok Shop allows sellers to dispute and appeal refund requests, but TikTok reserves the right to decide whether the buyer is eligible for a refund.

For returns that go through a second review, you can reject if you're not satisfied with the condition of the item that came back. To give yourself the best chance:

  • Photograph or film packing for higher-value orders, showing the item and the label.
  • Record serial numbers or batch codes where your products have them.
  • Inspect returns on arrival and document damage or missing parts right away.
  • Answer with facts, not frustration. A short, specific explanation with photos is easier for TikTok to evaluate.

Don't count on winning many disputes. The policy is written to protect buyers, and the time you spend arguing small refunds is usually better spent preventing them.

What does a return actually cost a seller?

More than the refund. A return can cost you the sale price, the original shipping, the return label, the product itself if it can't be resold, and part of TikTok's fee.

CostWhat happens on a refund
Sale revenueRefunded to the buyer
Original shipping you paidNot recovered
Return shippingYours on seller-fault returns, and on change-of-mind returns using TikTok's drop-off
The productLost if damaged, used or non-resellable
TikTok's referral feeReturned minus a refund administration fee in the US (20% of the referral fee, capped at $5 per SKU)
Affiliate commissionNot paid on fully refunded orders

The fee details and a worked example are in TikTok Shop fees explained. On the affiliate side, TikTok calculates commission as revenue minus refunds, times the rate, so a full refund pays the creator nothing. That's fair to you as the seller, but creators notice which products come back, and they may stop promoting a product with a high return rate.

How do returns work for UK sellers?

UK buyers also get 30 calendar days from delivery to raise a return or refund request on TikTok Shop, and most requests are approved automatically. Sellers pay return shipping when a product issue causes the return.

Key points from the UK policy page, updated in August 2026:

  • Automatic approval. TikTok Shop approves customer return requests automatically, except for items such as personalised products, sealed hygiene products and goods that deteriorate quickly.
  • 2 working days to respond to return requests that aren't auto-approved.
  • Refund after receipt. If you take no action within 2 calendar days after the return is received, TikTok refunds the customer.
  • Change of mind. Who pays postage depends on who arranges the return; check the UK policy's shipping section for your setup.

UK law applies alongside TikTok's rules. For online sales, GOV.UK says customers have 14 days from receiving an item to cancel, then another 14 days to send it back, and you must refund within 14 days of getting it back. TikTok's 30-day window is longer than that cancellation period, but UK consumer law still applies on its own terms, including to faulty goods, so read the GOV.UK guidance as well as TikTok's policy.

How can you keep TikTok Shop returns low?

Most returns trace back to a gap between what the buyer expected and what arrived. Close that gap and returns fall.

  • Show the real product. Use your own photos and videos, at true size and color.
  • Make claims match the listing. Affiliates have to stick to your listing, so a careful listing protects you twice.
  • Add size and fit details for clothing and anything that has to fit something else.
  • Pack for the trip. Damage in transit is a seller-fault return.
  • Ship fast and track everything. Late or lost parcels turn into refund requests.
  • Watch return reasons. If one reason repeats, fix the listing or the product before you scale it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the TikTok Shop return policy for sellers?

In the US, buyers can request a return and refund within 30 calendar days of delivery, sellers must respond within set deadlines or TikTok may approve automatically, and sellers pay return shipping when the product is at fault.

Who pays return shipping on TikTok Shop?

The seller pays when the item is damaged, defective, wrong or missing parts. For change-of-mind returns, the seller pays if the buyer uses TikTok's preferred drop-off logistics, and the buyer pays if they arrange the return themselves.

Can a TikTok Shop seller refuse a return?

Sellers can dispute and appeal refund requests, and can reject at the second review if the returned item's condition isn't acceptable. TikTok Shop makes the final call on whether the buyer gets a refund.

What can't be returned on TikTok Shop?

In the US, non-returnable categories include food, beverages, dietary supplements and other ingestible products, live plants and fresh flowers, trading cards and collectibles, pre-owned items, and chemicals.

Do affiliates lose their commission when an order is returned?

Yes. TikTok calculates commission on revenue minus refunds, so a fully refunded order pays the affiliate nothing.
