Selling Supplements on TikTok Shop: Rules and Risks

TikTok Shop dietary supplements are invite-only in the US. What's allowed and banned, the lab tests and documents required, and the claims rules.

By Updated 9 min read

Quick summary (TL;DR)

  • TikTok Shop dietary supplements are an invite-only category in the US, so a seller can't list them without an invitation from TikTok and extra review.
  • Vitamins, minerals, herbal, beauty, fitness and sexual wellness supplements may be allowed; weight management, mental wellness, CBD, GLP-1 and peptide products are prohibited.
  • Sellers must provide a recent lab test report from an approved or accredited lab plus real label photos, and manufacturers also need FDA facility registration and cGMP proof.
  • Neither sellers nor creators may claim a supplement treats, cures or prevents disease, and the FDA does not approve supplements before sale.
  • For a beginner with no brand, supplements are one of the hardest TikTok Shop categories to enter and one of the riskiest to promote.

TikTok Shop dietary supplements are an invite-only category in the US: you can't list vitamins, herbal products or other supplements until TikTok invites your shop, and every listing then goes through extra document review. Even with an invitation, TikTok Shop bans whole groups of supplements, such as weight loss products, and both sellers and creators must avoid any claim that a supplement treats or prevents disease.

This guide explains what's allowed, what's banned, which documents TikTok asks for, which claims break TikTok, FDA and FTC rules, and the risks that make supplements a poor first product for most beginners. Rules are for the US as of 2026 unless noted.

Can you sell dietary supplements on TikTok Shop?

Only by invitation. TikTok's US Restricted Products Policy lists dietary supplements and over-the-counter medications as invite-only categories, which means you can't simply apply for them the way you apply for beauty or electronics.

TikTok's Dietary Supplements Requirements page says access depends on an invitation and points sellers to their Account Manager. Invited sellers apply through the Qualification Center in Seller Center. After that, individual listings still need documents, so an invitation is the start of the review, not the end.

That puts supplements in a different tier from most products a new shop starts with. If you're still setting up an account, the general registration steps and other restricted categories are covered in how to sell on TikTok Shop. Which supplements are allowed, and which are banned?

Mainstream supplement types are allowed for invited sellers; anything aimed at weight loss, mental health or drug-like effects is prohibited.

The high-dose rule

TikTok also polices dosage. If a single serving of a vitamin or mineral exceeds the adult Tolerable Upper Intake Level set by the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, where that limit is tied to adverse effects, the listing faces immediate enforcement. TikTok says a label tweak doesn't fix it: the product has to be reformulated and backed by a new certificate of analysis.

Infant and toddler products

Only a short list is allowed for babies and toddlers, such as vitamin D drops, iron drops, basic multivitamins and probiotic or electrolyte products for ages 1 to 3. Each needs its own documents, including a compliance attestation.

What documents does TikTok Shop ask for?

TikTok asks every supplement seller for a recent lab test report and real label photos. Manufacturers and importers also prove FDA facility registration and cGMP compliance; resellers prove where they bought the stock.

If you make or import the product

  • FDA Food Facility Registration proof, with an establishment name and address that match the label.
  • cGMP certification confirming compliance with 21 CFR Part 111.
  • A product lab test report issued within 180 days, covering microbiological testing, heavy metals, contaminants such as pesticides or solvents, and content or potency.
  • Label photos of the front, back and sides of the physical package. Mock-ups and edited images aren't accepted.

If you resell someone else's brand

  • A purchase invoice dated within 180 days, in the same name and address as your shop, showing the manufacturer or distributor, with a combined purchase of at least 400 units.
  • A lab test report from one of TikTok's accredited partner labs, with the same testing scope.
  • Label photos, as above.

The approved lab list on TikTok's page includes names such as Eurofins, NSF International, SGS, UL Solutions and Intertek. The labels themselves must show the standard US supplement elements: the words "Dietary Supplement", net quantity, a Supplement Facts panel, serving size, ingredients, allergens, the manufacturer or distributor's full address, and a US contact for adverse event reports.

Those requirements alone rule out the cheapest shortcuts beginners try, like listing a white-label product without testing it or buying a few dozen units to resell.

What can you claim about a supplement?

You can describe how a supplement supports normal body function; you can't say it diagnoses, treats, cures, mitigates or prevents a disease. That line comes from US law, and TikTok enforces it on listings and videos.

What the FDA allows

The FDA explains that dietary supplements may carry structure/function claims, such as "calcium builds strong bones". The FDA doesn't pre-approve these claims or the products; the manufacturer must have evidence that the claim is truthful and not misleading, must notify the FDA within 30 days of marketing it, and must include a disclaimer that the FDA hasn't evaluated the claim and that the product isn't intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Only drugs may make disease claims.

TikTok mirrors this. Its requirements say that if you make a structure/function claim, the FDA disclaimer must appear on both the listing and the physical label. A listing may never say "FDA-approved" or "FDA-certified".

What TikTok's medical claims guidance prohibits

TikTok's Medical Claims Best Practices page lists what creators can't do:

  • Claim a product treats, cures, prevents or manages a disease.
  • Suggest it replaces medical treatment or professional care.
  • Compare it favorably with prescription medication.
  • Use images of diseased organs, doctors endorsing the product, or before-and-after framing that implies a cure.

General wellness language, such as "supports digestive health" or describing how you feel when you use it, is the safer zone.

What the FTC adds

The FTC's Health Products Compliance Guidance says health claims need competent and reliable scientific evidence, generally meaning well-designed human clinical testing. It also warns that advertisers can't use testimonials to make claims they couldn't substantiate directly, and that an honest personal experience isn't enough on its own.

Your story can still be a claim

"This fixed my anxiety" in a video is a disease-type claim even if it's true for you. Mental wellness supplements are banned outright on TikTok Shop US, and the FTC holds the advertiser responsible for what endorsers say.

Can affiliates promote supplements on TikTok Shop?

Yes, if an approved shop lists the product, but the risk sits with the creator's words. TikTok's medical claims guidance is written for creators, and it says content with prohibited claims may be removed and can lead to feature restrictions or account suspension.

Practical rules for affiliates:

  • Say only what the label says. If the listing says "supports normal energy levels", don't upgrade it to "cures fatigue".
  • Disclose the commission in the video. The FTC says a video endorsement needs the disclosure in the video itself, not just in the caption.
  • Don't repeat a brand's bigger claims. The FTC warns influencers not to make claims that need proof the advertiser doesn't have, such as proof that a product treats a health condition.
  • Skip the shortcut formats. Before-and-after cure framing and "doctor-approved" overlays are exactly what the guidance flags.

General affiliate rules and the application steps are in how to become a TikTok Shop affiliate.

What are the risks of selling supplements on TikTok Shop?

The risks are financial, account-level and legal. TikTok's Restricted Products Policy lists enforcement that can include removing listings, suspending or ending selling privileges, refunding customers, withholding payments and destroying inventory without reimbursement, on top of possible civil or criminal liability under the law.

For supplements specifically, TikTok describes a tiered response to prohibited claims: the first violation deactivates the listing and gives you a chance to fix it; later violations freeze it until it's reviewed. High-dose violations freeze the listing immediately, without notice.

Other risks to price in:

  • Upfront cost before the first sale. Lab reports, compliant labels and, for resellers, a 400-unit minimum purchase all come before you know whether a product converts.
  • Refunds. Buyers who expected dramatic results ask for their money back, and refunded orders earn nothing.
  • Creator behavior you don't control. One affiliate's exaggerated video can trigger enforcement on your product.
  • Rules that move. TikTok updates its supplement requirements; recheck the official page before every new product.

Outside the US, food supplement and health claim rules differ. UK and EU sellers should use their own Seller Centre's requirements and their national food regulator's guidance rather than this US summary.

Is the supplement category a good place for a beginner?

Usually not. Supplements demand an invitation, compliant manufacturing or sourcing, lab testing and careful claims, so they suit established brands better than someone testing a first product.

If you're new, a lower-risk sequence looks like this:

  1. Start in an open or simpler category where you can learn content and fulfillment without lab reports. Our guide to the best products to sell on TikTok Shop covers what tends to work.
  2. Learn claims discipline early. Practice describing products honestly, which helps in every category.
  3. Revisit supplements later, if you build or partner with a brand that already has testing, registration and compliant labels.

Results in any category depend on your product, content and execution. Many first products don't sell, and supplements add compliance costs before you find out.

Next steps

Decide which role you'd play: an invited seller with a compliant brand, or an affiliate promoting someone else's approved product. Either way, read the official requirements page before spending money.

Frequently asked questions

Can you sell supplements on TikTok Shop?

Only if TikTok invites you. In the US, dietary supplements are invite-only, and approved sellers still go through product-level document review before each listing goes live.

Can I sell weight loss supplements on TikTok Shop?

No. TikTok's US dietary supplements requirements prohibit weight management supplements, including appetite suppressants, diet shakes, fat burners and weight loss bars.

Do supplements on TikTok Shop need FDA approval?

No. The FDA does not approve dietary supplements before sale, so a listing must never say FDA-approved or FDA-certified. TikTok instead asks for lab tests, label photos and, for manufacturers, FDA facility registration and cGMP proof.

Can affiliates promote supplements on TikTok Shop?

Yes, when an approved shop lists them, but the creator is responsible for the words in the video. Disease claims, before-and-after cure framing and comparisons with prescription drugs can get the video removed and the account restricted.

What lab report does TikTok Shop require for supplements?

A product lab test report issued within 180 days that covers microbiology, heavy metals, contaminants and potency, from one of TikTok's accredited partner labs or a qualifying accredited in-house lab.
