Steps at a glance

  1. 1Check eligibility. Confirm you are 18 or older, based in a TikTok Shop market, have a personal account in good standing and meet the follower threshold (1,000 in the US as of 2026).
  2. 2Prepare your account. Switch to a clean, focused niche, post a few non-shoppable videos about the kind of products you want to promote, and fix any community guideline strikes.
  3. 3Apply in the app. Open your profile menu, go to the TikTok Shop creator tools, and follow the prompts to apply and complete identity and age verification.
  4. 4Choose your first products. Browse the affiliate marketplace, compare commission, reviews and seller performance, and add three to five products you can demonstrate well to your showcase.
  5. 5Post, disclose and track. Tag products in short videos, disclose that you earn a commission, stay within pilot limits, and review which videos drive clicks and orders.
  6. 6Set up payouts. Once you earn commissions, add your tax information and a bank account in the commissions section so you can withdraw.

To become a TikTok Shop affiliate in the US, you need to be at least 18, based in the US, pass TikTok's identity checks and have at least 1,000 followers, then apply through the creator tools in the TikTok app. Once approved, you add products from the affiliate marketplace to your showcase and earn the commission the seller sets on each delivered order.

That is the whole path in two sentences. The rest of this guide covers the details that trip people up: the pilot phase for new creators, how to pick the first products, disclosure rules, and what to expect in your first months as a TikTok Shop affiliate.

What is a TikTok Shop affiliate?

A TikTok Shop affiliate is a creator who promotes other sellers' products in videos, LIVEs or a profile showcase and earns a commission on the sales. You never buy stock, ship orders or handle returns.

TikTok recognizes three creator types in the US, and only one of them is what most people mean by "affiliate":

Creator typeFollower minimumHow you get accessWhat you can promote
Affiliate creator1,000Self-apply in the appProducts from the affiliate marketplace (limited during the pilot)
Marketing creatorNone to bindInvited by a sellerThat seller's products; marketplace access from 5,000 followers
Official shop creatorNoneInvited; account name matches the shopThe linked shop's own products

Figures are for the US as of 2026, from TikTok Shop's creator eligibility pages. If you want the bigger picture of how the platform works first, start with what TikTok Shop is and how it works.

What are the TikTok Shop affiliate requirements?

In the US you must be 18 or older, based in the US, have at least 1,000 followers, and pass identity and age verification. Your account can't be a government or political account.

The eligibility policy adds a few conditions that matter more than they look:

  • Clean history. You can't have had e-commerce permissions revoked before, or be linked to an account that did.
  • Policy compliance. Your content must follow the TikTok Shop Content Policy, the Community Guidelines and the Creator Code of Conduct.
  • Identity checks on time. Age confirmation must be done within 2 months of registration, using in-app recognition, a credit card or a government ID upload, with up to 15 attempts.

What about the UK and other markets?

The UK and EU markets run their own affiliate programs with the same two collaboration types (targeted and open), but thresholds and documents are set per market. We couldn't confirm a current official UK follower minimum, so check the Creator Center or the UK Seller Center before you plan around a number you saw in a video.

How does the new-creator pilot program work?

If you have under 5,000 followers, you start in a pilot program for at least 30 days, with limits on how much shoppable content you can post and which products you can promote.

During the standard pilot you can post up to 3 shoppable videos per day and 3 shoppable LIVEs per week, and you can only promote products from shops with a high Shop Performance Score (95% or more). Creators who break rules or post low-quality content are moved to an extended pilot with tighter caps: 3 shoppable videos and 1 shoppable LIVE per week.

To graduate, TikTok's pilot page lists these criteria:

  1. Reach 5,000 followers.
  2. Spend at least 30 days in the program.
  3. Hold a Creator Health Rating of at least 176 points.
  4. Complete one task: 6 or more shoppable videos of at least 8 seconds each, or a LIVE of at least 5 minutes, or 10 orders from your shoppable content.
  5. Pass a probation quiz.

Treat the pilot as practice

Three shoppable videos a day is plenty for a beginner. Use the pilot to test hooks and products, and keep posting non-shoppable videos that build the audience you need to reach 5,000 followers.

After graduation, general posting limits still apply. From May 11, 2026, TikTok caps every creator at 30 shoppable short videos and 60 shoppable photo posts per day.

How do you apply, step by step?

You apply from inside the TikTok app, and the process is free. Get your account ready first, because a messy profile makes the early videos harder.

1. Prepare your account

Pick a lane before you apply: kitchen, cleaning, beauty, tech accessories, pets, fitness. A focused account is easier for viewers to follow and easier for TikTok to recommend to the right people. Post a handful of regular videos in that niche, and resolve any community guideline strikes.

2. Apply and verify

Open your profile, tap the menu in the top corner, and look for the TikTok Shop section in your creator tools. Menu labels move between app versions, so if you can't find it, search "TikTok Shop for creators" in the app's help center. Follow the prompts and finish identity and age verification promptly.

3. Pick your first products

In the affiliate marketplace, filter by your niche and compare products on four things:

  • Commission. Sellers set rates between 1% and 80%. A targeted invitation's rate overrides the open rate for the same product.
  • Reviews and ratings. Refunds and cancellations cancel your commission, so product quality is your problem too.
  • Seller performance. Reliable shipping means fewer unhappy buyers.
  • Demonstrability. Can you show the result in the first 3 seconds?

Start with three to five products. Some sellers offer free samples, but sample settings are up to them and approval isn't automatic. Our guide to the best products to sell on TikTok Shop goes deeper on choosing.

4. Post your first shoppable videos

Tag the product, show it working, and tell viewers where to buy it. Keep claims consistent with the product page. For structure and hooks, see how to make videos that sell on TikTok Shop.

5. Set up payouts

Commissions are withdrawable only after orders are delivered and settled. In the US, add your tax information and a bank account in the commissions section; the full process is in how TikTok Shop pays you.

How much do TikTok Shop affiliates earn?

It varies too much for an honest average. Your earnings depend on the commission rate, the product price, how many viewers buy, and how many of those orders are refunded.

TikTok's own formula is simple: commission = (revenue minus refunds) times the commission rate. A fully refunded or canceled order pays nothing.

Example (hypothetical): you promote a $20 product at a 15% commission. Each delivered, non-refunded order earns you $3. To earn $300 in a month you'd need 100 such orders. If a video gets 10,000 views and 1 in 500 viewers buys, that single video brings 20 orders, or $60. Many videos will do far worse, and a few may do better.

That's why most beginners earn little at first. Results depend on your effort, niche and execution. Views alone don't pay here; that's a separate program with a 10,000-follower bar, explained in our guide to the TikTok Creator Rewards Program.

What rules do affiliates have to follow?

Two sets of rules matter most: advertising disclosure and TikTok's content policy. Breaking either one can cost you views, commissions or your selling permissions.

Disclosure. In the US, the FTC says that if you earn money when your audience buys through your content, you must disclose it, and in video the disclosure should be in the video itself, not just the caption. Saying "I earn a commission if you buy through this link" on screen and out loud is clear. Don't assume a platform label alone is enough.

Honest claims. TikTok Shop's content policy requires that what you say matches the product page and packaging. No absolute claims, no filters that fake results, and no AI-generated demos that change how the product looks.

Frequently asked questions

How many followers do you need to be a TikTok Shop affiliate?

In the US, as of 2026, you need at least 1,000 followers to self-apply as an affiliate creator. Under 5,000 followers you start in a pilot program with posting limits, and you graduate after meeting TikTok's criteria, including 5,000 followers.

Can I join TikTok Shop affiliate with fewer than 1,000 followers?

Not by self-applying in the US. A seller can invite an account as a marketing creator with no minimum, but that is a different arrangement from open access to the affiliate marketplace.

Does it cost money to become a TikTok Shop affiliate?

No. Joining is free and you don't buy inventory. Your costs are time, a phone, and possibly products you buy yourself if you don't get free samples.

Can I be a TikTok Shop affiliate outside the US?

Yes, in markets where TikTok Shop runs, such as the UK. Requirements differ by country, so check the Seller Center or Creator Center for your own market before applying.

How long does approval take?

TikTok doesn't publish a fixed timeline. Identity and age checks can add time, and TikTok's eligibility policy says age confirmation must be completed within 2 months of registering.
