How Long Does It Take to Make Money on TikTok?
How long does it take to make money on TikTok? Honest ranges for each route, from Shop sales to Creator Rewards, plus the payout delays most people miss.
Quick summary (TL;DR)
- How long it takes to make money on TikTok depends on the route: selling your own products can start in days or weeks, while view-based income needs a large audience that many accounts never reach.
- There are two clocks: the time to qualify and make a first sale or qualified view, and the payout delay after that, which TikTok sets in its own rules.
- US Shop affiliates are typically paid on the 15th day after an order is delivered, new US sellers wait 31 days after delivery, and Creator Rewards are calculated the month after they're earned and paid on the 15th once you pass $50.
- Realistically, many beginners need one to three months to see a first small payment, and several more months before income is regular, if it becomes regular at all.
In this guide
How long it takes to make money on TikTok depends on the route you take: selling your own products on TikTok Shop can produce a first sale within days or weeks, affiliate commissions usually take one to three months, and view-based income can take many months because it needs 10,000 followers first. On top of that, TikTok holds money for a set period after each sale or month, so the time to make money on TikTok is always longer than the time to your first order.
Nobody can promise you a timeline, and TikTok publishes no data on how long creators take to earn. What we can do is lay out the official clocks you can't skip, add realistic ranges for the parts that depend on you, and show the math. Rules below are US rules as of 2026 unless noted.
How long does each TikTok income route take?
The fastest routes are the ones that pay for sales, because they have the lowest entry bar. Routes that pay for views or fan support start later, because you first need a large audience.
| Route | Can start | Payout delay after you earn | Realistic time to a first payment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sell your own products (TikTok Shop) | Once your shop is approved; no follower minimum | 31 days after delivery for new US sellers | Often 1 to 3 months |
| Shop affiliate | At 1,000 followers (US, self-apply) | Typically the 15th day after delivery, up to 31 days | Often 1 to 3 months after approval |
| Marketing creator for one shop | When a seller invites you; no follower minimum | Same commission rules as affiliates | Depends on the invitation |
| Creator Rewards Program | At 10,000 followers and 100,000 views in 30 days | Calculated the month after; paid on the 15th, $50 minimum | Months to years, if ever |
| LIVE Gifts, Subscriptions, brand deals | Each has its own follower bar | Varies by feature | Usually after a loyal audience exists |
Official rules come from TikTok's US Seller Center, Creator Rewards terms and Newsroom, checked in 2026. The "realistic" column is our estimate, not TikTok data. For every route's full eligibility list, see how to make money on TikTok.

Why are there two clocks?
Every TikTok income has two waiting periods: the time it takes you to qualify and earn, and the time TikTok takes to release the money. You control the first. TikTok's rules fix the second.
Clock 1: qualifying and earning. Reaching 1,000 or 10,000 followers, getting approved, finding a product, and posting enough videos to get a first order. This part varies hugely from person to person.
Clock 2: settlement. Once you've earned, TikTok's payout rules apply:
- Affiliates (US). TikTok says you typically receive commission on the 15th day after the order delivery date. If the seller's settlement period is longer, or a return, refund or dispute is open, it can take up to 31 days after delivery.
- New sellers (US). New shops start in an introductory tier with a 31-day settlement period after delivery. As the Shop Performance Score improves, that can drop to 8, 5 or even 1 day.
- Creator Rewards. Rewards are calculated in the month after they're earned and paid on the 15th of the month, once the balance reaches the $50 minimum payment threshold.
Both Shop clocks start on delivery, not the order date. US sellers have up to 6 business days from Awaiting Shipment to get a regular order delivered, so add a week or so on top. The mechanics of withdrawing and fixing late payouts are in how to get paid from TikTok Shop.
What does a realistic first-payment timeline look like?
For a new US affiliate who posts consistently, a first commission payment often lands somewhere in the second or third month after approval. Here's how the clocks stack up.
Example (hypothetical): you reach 1,000 followers and get approved as an affiliate. Because you're under 5,000 followers, you enter TikTok's pilot program for at least 30 days, with up to 3 shoppable videos a day.
| Step | When (hypothetical) | Why it takes that long |
|---|---|---|
| Approved as an affiliate | Day 0 | Identity checks done |
| First videos posted | Days 1 to 10 | Choosing products, waiting for samples or buying them |
| First order | Day 25 | Many early videos get few views; this one finds buyers |
| Order delivered | Day 30 | Seller ships and the carrier delivers |
| Commission paid | Day 45 | Typically the 15th day after delivery |
That's roughly six to seven weeks from approval to cash, and it assumes a sale in the first month. Plenty of new affiliates don't sell anything in month one, which pushes everything back. A first payment is also usually small. Example (hypothetical): at a 10% commission on a $20 product, that first order earns $2.
The seller version is similar but with a longer hold. In the same hypothetical, a sale on day 10 that's delivered on day 15 settles around day 46 for a new US shop on the 31-day introductory tier.
How long does it take to reach the follower thresholds?
There's no official figure, and anyone who quotes a precise average is guessing. Some accounts pass 1,000 followers in days after one video takes off; others post for months without getting there.
What you can say honestly:
- 1,000 followers is reachable for many people who post regularly in one clear niche, but "regularly" usually means several times a week for weeks or months.
- 10,000 followers takes most accounts much longer, and many never reach it. Creator Rewards also requires 100,000 views in the last 30 days, which is a separate hurdle.
- Followers aren't income. A focused 2,000-follower account that recommends products people trust can out-earn a bigger, unfocused one.
That's why the sales routes come first for most beginners. You can sell your own products before you have any audience, and US affiliates can start at 1,000 followers.
What slows people down?
Most delays come from a few predictable mistakes, not from the algorithm. Each one adds weeks.
Waiting for the "right" follower count
People who wait for 10,000 followers before trying to earn often spend months earning nothing. Starting with a sales route earlier means you learn what converts while you grow.
Posting irregularly
Two videos one week and none the next makes it hard to learn anything from your numbers. A fixed schedule you can keep beats bursts.
Changing niche every week
Each new topic restarts the audience you're building. Pick one buying-friendly niche and give it at least two to three months.
Ignoring the pilot limits
New US affiliates under 5,000 followers stay in the pilot for at least 30 days, are limited to products from shops with a 95% or higher Shop Performance Score, and can't join campaigns. Plan your first month around those limits instead of fighting them.
Overclaiming
Exaggerated claims lead to refunds, and refunded orders don't pay. Policy violations can also restrict your account, which resets your timeline.
Can you speed it up honestly?
You can shorten the parts you control, but you can't skip the settlement clocks, and no method makes income predictable. These help:
- Start with a sales route now. Sell your own product, or apply as an affiliate when you hit 1,000 followers.
- Make several videos per product. One video tells you almost nothing; five with different hooks tell you something.
- Choose products with good reviews. Fewer returns means fewer commissions clawed back.
- Sellers: ship fast and keep your score up. A better Shop Performance Score is what moves you from 31-day settlement to faster tiers.
- Set a review date. Give one approach 60 to 90 days of consistent posting, then decide based on clicks and orders.
Be wary of anyone selling a shortcut. Paid "growth packages", bought followers and "instant viral" services don't create buyers, and some are scams. For a fuller look at whether the time investment pays off for you, read is TikTok Shop worth it.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get paid on TikTok?
It depends on the feature. US TikTok Shop affiliate commissions typically arrive on the 15th day after delivery, new US sellers start with a 31-day settlement period after delivery, and Creator Rewards are paid on the 15th of the month after they're calculated, with a $50 minimum.
Can you make money on TikTok in your first month?
It's possible, especially by selling your own products, but it isn't typical. Even a sale in week one only pays out after delivery and the settlement period, so the money often lands in the second month.
How long does it take to get 10,000 followers on TikTok?
TikTok doesn't publish an average, and there's no reliable public figure. Some accounts get there in weeks after a viral video; many take a year or longer, and many never do.
Why haven't I been paid for my TikTok Shop sales yet?
Payout clocks start on delivery, not on the order date, and unresolved returns or disputes can push affiliate commissions out to as late as 31 days after delivery.
