Gumroad vs Lemon Squeezy is a choice between two merchant-of-record checkouts: Gumroad is the simpler tool with a small built-in marketplace, while Lemon Squeezy charges a lower fee per sale and is built more for software, license keys and subscriptions. Both collect and remit sales tax and VAT for you, and neither charges a monthly fee, so the decision usually rests on fees, product rules and how much you trust each platform's direction.

Below we compare them on the points that change what you keep and whether you're allowed to sell at all, with figures checked on each official page as of 2026.

If you're new to Gumroad itself, start with what Gumroad is and how it works. And if you're still deciding whether to sell through a checkout tool at all, our guide to selling digital products helps you match the platform to the product and the traffic you have.

How do the fees compare on a real sale?

On a typical direct sale, Lemon Squeezy takes roughly half of what Gumroad takes, but its surcharges close part of the gap for international buyers, PayPal payments and subscriptions.

Lemon Squeezy's fee documentation lists these extras on top of the 5% plus $0.50 base: 1.5% for transactions outside the US, 1.5% for PayPal, 0.5% for subscription payments, 5% on payments recovered by abandoned-cart emails and 3% on affiliate referrals. Gumroad's extras are simpler: card processing on direct sales, PayPal fees for PayPal payments, and a flat 30% when the buyer came through Discover.

What you keep (hypothetical examples)

Example (hypothetical): one product sold through your own link, before payout fees and income tax.

ScenarioGumroad: you keepLemon Squeezy: you keep
$5 template, US buyer, card$3.55$4.25
$20 ebook, US buyer, card$16.62$18.50
$20 ebook, buyer in Germany, PayPal$17.50 minus PayPal's fee$17.90
$20 monthly subscription, US buyer, card$16.62$18.40
$20 ebook found through Gumroad Discover$14.00Not applicable

How we got there: Gumroad takes 10% plus $0.50 and card processing adds 2.9% plus $0.30 ($3.38 on $20). Lemon Squeezy takes 5% plus $0.50 ($1.50 on $20), 8% plus $0.50 for an international PayPal buyer ($2.10), and 5.5% plus $0.50 on a subscription ($1.60). Gumroad doesn't publish a single PayPal rate, so that row depends on PayPal's fee. Rounded to the cent.

The fixed $0.50 hits both platforms equally, so neither suits very cheap items. For setting a price that survives fees, see how to price digital products.

Payout fees

  • Gumroad pays out once your balance reaches $100 on the standard schedules. Bank payouts carry no listed fee; PayPal payouts cost 2%; optional instant payouts for eligible US sellers cost 3%, according to its getting paid page.
  • Lemon Squeezy pays out twice a month. Its docs list free payouts to US bank accounts, 1% to international bank accounts, $0.50 for US PayPal and 3% capped at $30 for international PayPal.

For hold periods and instant-transfer options on more platforms, see our comparison of digital product payout speeds.

Gumroad also offers a high-volume rate: after $20,000 in paid sales in a calendar month, new direct sales that month drop to 5% plus $0.50. Few beginners reach it, but it narrows the gap for big sellers.

Which one handles taxes better?

Both handle sales tax the same way at the core: as merchant of record, each is legally the seller and collects and remits sales tax, VAT and GST on your sales. Gumroad's sales tax page says it handles collection and remittance worldwide, and Lemon Squeezy's fee docs say its platform fee covers taxes.

The differences are at the edges:

  • Physical items: Gumroad explains how VAT works on physical products shipped into the EU. Lemon Squeezy doesn't allow physical goods, so the question doesn't arise.
  • Income tax: neither platform files your income tax. Your profit is income where you live, and in the US you report it whether or not you receive a Form 1099-K.
  • Other channels: if you also sell on Etsy or your own Stripe checkout, those sales follow different tax rules. The tax section of where to sell digital products compares them.

This is general information, not tax advice.

What can you sell on each platform?

Both allow digital products you created; both ban PLR and resell-rights files. Lemon Squeezy's list of banned categories is broader and matters a lot if your topic is making money.

Lemon Squeezy's prohibited products page bans, among others:

  • Physical goods of any kind.
  • Services of any kind, including design, marketing, web development and consulting.
  • PLR and MRR products, or anything you have a license to sell but don't hold the original rights to.
  • Business-in-a-box, work-from-home and get-rich-quick products, plus MLM schemes.
  • NFT and crypto products, and a long list of regulated items.

Gumroad's list of things you can't sell bans reselling products you didn't create (including PLR and MRR), dropshipping-related products, AI services fulfilled outside Gumroad, credit repair products and several high-risk categories.

What this means in practice: a printable planner, a font, a Lightroom preset or a coding template is fine on both. A side-hustle guide may be fine on Gumroad but needs a careful read of Lemon Squeezy's rules first. A design service or a physical product rules out Lemon Squeezy entirely.

Which features differ the most?

Both cover the basics: product pages, file delivery, discount codes, affiliates, subscriptions and license keys. The differences that matter for beginners:

Gumroad's strengths

  • Discover marketplace, which can show your product to buyers browsing Gumroad, at a 30% fee.
  • Audience tools: followers, email broadcasts and automated workflows, per its features page.
  • Fast start: you can publish a product the day you sign up; the review happens before payouts.

Lemon Squeezy's strengths

  • Built for software: license key management and subscription billing are core features.
  • Email marketing included free up to 500 subscribers, according to its pricing page.
  • Test mode: you can build and test your store before activation. Going live requires a business questionnaire and identity verification, and its activation docs say approvals typically take 2 to 3 business days.
  • Marketplace listing for products that have at least 3 sales or $50 in sales, according to its marketplace guidelines.

What is changing with Lemon Squeezy and Stripe?

Stripe owns Lemon Squeezy, and in a January 2026 post the team said its focus had moved to building Stripe Managed Payments, Stripe's own merchant-of-record product. The 2026 update acknowledged slower support responses and less frequent product updates, and said the team wants to give Lemon Squeezy users an easy way to migrate.

The post did not announce a shutdown, and the pricing page still lists the fees above. For a beginner, the practical takeaway is:

  • Expect Lemon Squeezy to work, but don't expect many new features.
  • Keep your product files, customer list and license records exportable, so a future move is painless.
  • Check the official blog and pricing page before you commit, because the setup may change during 2026.

Gumroad has no comparable transition announced, which counts in its favor for anyone who wants a platform that stays the same for a while.

Which should you choose?

Run through these questions in order:

  1. Is it physical, a service or PLR? Physical or service: Gumroad (or another platform), not Lemon Squeezy. PLR: neither.
  2. Is it about making money, a business kit or work from home? Read Lemon Squeezy's prohibited list carefully; Gumroad is usually the safer fit.
  3. Do you need any built-in discovery? Gumroad's Discover gives a small chance of marketplace sales. If you need real search traffic, look at Etsy instead.
  4. Are your sales mostly direct, at $15 or more? Lemon Squeezy's lower fee adds up.
  5. Is it software with license keys or subscriptions? Lemon Squeezy is designed for this.
  6. Do you value stability over the lowest fee? Gumroad, given Lemon Squeezy's transition.

Neither platform will find buyers for you. Most sales on both come from traffic you create, so plan that first with how to market digital products with no audience.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lemon Squeezy cheaper than Gumroad?

Usually, yes. As of 2026 Lemon Squeezy's base fee is 5% plus $0.50 per sale versus Gumroad's 10% plus $0.50 plus card processing. International, PayPal and subscription surcharges narrow the gap, but on most direct sales Lemon Squeezy keeps more in your pocket.

Do Gumroad and Lemon Squeezy both handle sales tax?

Yes. Both act as merchant of record, so they calculate, collect and remit sales tax, VAT and GST on your sales. You are still responsible for income tax on your profit.

Is Lemon Squeezy shutting down?

No shutdown had been announced as of its January 2026 update. The team said support had become slower and updates less frequent while it builds Stripe Managed Payments, and that it plans an easy migration path for users.

Can I sell courses or ebooks on Lemon Squeezy?

Lemon Squeezy allows digital goods such as ebooks, design assets, audio, video and software, but it bans business-in-a-box, work-from-home and get-rich-quick products. Check its prohibited products page before listing anything about making money.

Which is better for beginners, Gumroad or Lemon Squeezy?

Gumroad is the easier start: no store review questionnaire, a simple product page and a small marketplace. Lemon Squeezy suits sellers who care more about per-sale fees, license keys and subscriptions.
