What Is Gumroad and How Does It Work for Sellers?
What is Gumroad? A checkout and storefront for digital products that handles sales tax. Fees, payouts, banned products and who it suits, as of 2026.
Quick summary (TL;DR)
- Gumroad is an online platform where creators sell digital products, memberships and subscriptions from a hosted product page, with checkout, file delivery and sales tax handled for them.
- As of 2026, Gumroad charges 10% plus $0.50 per direct sale with card processing on top, and a flat 30% on sales that come from its Discover marketplace; there is no monthly fee.
- Gumroad acts as merchant of record, so it collects and remits sales tax and VAT on your sales, but your profit is still income you report yourself.
- Payouts need a $100 minimum balance on the standard schedules, new accounts go through a review, and reselling products you didn't create, including PLR, is not allowed.
- Gumroad is easy to start with, but most sales come from traffic you bring, so it suits people with an audience or a plan to build one.

Gumroad is an online platform that lets creators sell digital products, such as ebooks, templates, presets, courses and memberships, from a simple hosted product page with checkout and file delivery built in. What makes Gumroad different from most storefront tools is that it acts as the legal seller of record, so it collects and remits sales tax for you, and it charges a fee per sale instead of a monthly subscription.
That makes Gumroad one of the lowest-friction ways to put a first product online. It doesn't make the product sell, though. Below we explain how Gumroad works for sellers in 2026: the fees, how payouts work, what's banned, and who it actually suits.
How does Gumroad work for sellers?
You create a free account, add a product, upload the files, set a price and share the link. When someone buys, Gumroad takes the payment, delivers the files or content, emails the receipt, and adds the money, minus fees, to your Gumroad balance. It then pays you out on a schedule.
The basic flow looks like this:
- Create the product. Choose a product type, write the description, add a cover image and upload files. Paid products can include single files of up to 20 GB each; free products are limited to 250 MB in total, according to Gumroad's file size help page.
- Share the link. Your product page lives on your Gumroad profile, and you can also embed checkout on your own site or use a custom domain.
- Get paid. Sales build up in your balance, and Gumroad pays out to your bank account or PayPal once you pass its minimum.
Gumroad is a sales tool, not a business plan. If you're still choosing what to make and how to find buyers, our step-by-step guide to selling digital products walks through the whole path, from product idea to first sales.
What features does Gumroad include?
According to Gumroad's features page, sellers get:
- Pricing options: one-time prices, pay what you want, memberships and recurring subscriptions.
- Product versions: for example PDF and ePub, or a basic and a premium tier.
- License keys for software and plugins.
- Audience tools: follower lists, email broadcasts and automated email workflows.
- Discount codes and affiliates who earn a commission for referring buyers.
- Analytics on views and sales.
What can you sell on Gumroad, and what is banned?
You can sell digital products you created yourself: ebooks, templates, presets, fonts, audio, video, software, courses, memberships and similar. Gumroad describes itself as built for writers, musicians, filmmakers, developers and educators.
The rules matter more than most beginners expect. Gumroad's list of things you can't sell says, in general, that you can't resell products you didn't create. It specifically names:
- Reselling ebooks, courses, prompts, templates, fonts or presets made by someone else.
- PLR and MRR products, meaning files sold with resell rights.
- Products related to dropshipping.
- AI services delivered outside Gumroad, such as access to chatbots or generation tools.
- Credit repair products, gift cards and other financial instruments, and adult content.
The list is longer than this and changes, so read the current version before you build a product around Gumroad. If your plan involved resell-rights files, our guide to PLR versus creating your own product explains the trade-offs.
How much does Gumroad charge sellers?
Gumroad charges 10% plus $0.50 per direct sale, plus card processing of 2.9% plus $0.30, and a flat 30% on sales from its Discover marketplace, as of 2026. There is no monthly fee, according to its pricing page and fee help article.
| Fee | Amount as of 2026 | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Direct sale fee | 10% + $0.50 | Sales through your profile, product link or embed |
| Card processing | 2.9% + $0.30 | On top of the direct sale fee; PayPal fees apply instead for PayPal payments |
| Discover marketplace | Flat 30%, processing included | Buyers who find you through Gumroad's marketplace |
| High-volume rate | 5% + $0.50 on direct sales | After your paid sales reach $20,000 in a calendar month, for the rest of that month |
| PayPal payout | 2% | When Gumroad pays you through PayPal |
| Instant payout (US) | 3% | Optional, for eligible US creators |
| Monthly fee | None | — |
What you keep per sale
Example (hypothetical): a US buyer pays by card for a product sold through your direct link.
| Price | Gumroad fee (10% + $0.50) | Card processing (2.9% + $0.30) | You keep | If the sale came from Discover (30%) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $5 | $1.00 | $0.45 | $3.55 | $3.50 |
| $20 | $2.50 | $0.88 | $16.62 | $14.00 |
| $50 | $5.50 | $1.75 | $42.75 | $35.00 |
Illustrative math before payout fees and income tax; figures rounded to the cent. On a $5 price, fees take almost 30%, mostly because of the fixed $0.80 per sale, which is why very cheap products earn little on Gumroad. Our guide on how to price digital products shows how to choose a price that survives the fees.
When you refund a buyer, Gumroad returns its own fee on the refunded part but keeps the payment processing portion, because processors don't return it.
What does it mean that Gumroad is the merchant of record?
It means Gumroad is legally the seller in each transaction, so it calculates, collects and remits sales tax, VAT and GST on your sales. Gumroad's sales tax page says it now acts as merchant of record for all sales and that you don't need to manage any tax settings.
That removes a real burden. Selling digital products to buyers in the EU, the UK or many US states can otherwise create tax registration and filing obligations in each place.
What it does not cover:
- Your income tax. Profit from sales is your income. In the US, Gumroad's payment processor issues a Form 1099-K if your US account has more than $20,000 in gross volume and more than 200 transactions in a year, according to Gumroad's 1099 page. The IRS says you must still report income even if you don't receive the form.
- Sales made outside Gumroad. If you also sell on Etsy or your own checkout, those platforms have their own tax handling.
For how other platforms deal with tax, see the tax section of where to sell digital products. This is general information, not tax advice.
How and when does Gumroad pay you?
Gumroad pays out once your balance reaches $100, on a daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly schedule you choose, to a local bank account or to PayPal where bank payouts aren't available. The details come from Gumroad's getting paid page:
- Holding period: on weekly, monthly and quarterly schedules, each sale waits at least 7 days in your balance before it can be paid out.
- Timing: payouts include sales made through the previous Friday, and bank transfers can take 2 to 7 business days depending on the country.
- PayPal: paid in USD with a 2% processing fee.
- Instant payouts: available to eligible US creators for a 3% fee, after at least one regular payout and 60 days of processing.
- Verification: Stripe, Gumroad's processor, asks for identity documents, and US sellers must provide a Social Security number.
The first payout takes longer
New accounts go through a review that Gumroad says can take one to three weeks, typically once you have a few sales and a balance over $100. Don't try to speed it up by buying your own product: Gumroad warns that payment processors treat that as fraud, and it can get the account suspended. Use the test purchase feature instead. Does Gumroad bring you customers?
A little, through Discover, but you should plan as if it brings none. Discover is Gumroad's marketplace, where products can be recommended in search and browsing, and it costs a flat 30% per sale.
Gumroad is mainly a checkout. Most sellers make most of their sales from traffic they create: an email list, Pinterest, YouTube, a blog, a community where they help people, or another creator's audience. That's the opposite of Etsy, where some buyers arrive through the platform's own search.
If you don't have an audience yet, that's not a reason to skip Gumroad, but it is a reason to plan your marketing before launch. Our guide on how to market digital products with no audience covers channels that work from zero.
Who is Gumroad good for, and who should skip it?
Gumroad fits some sellers far better than others.
Gumroad is a good fit if you:
- Want to sell a first digital product quickly, without a website or monthly fee.
- Sell to buyers in many countries and don't want to handle sales tax and VAT yourself.
- Already have, or are building, an audience that will click your link.
- Sell at prices where the $0.80 in fixed fees per sale is a small share.
Consider something else if you:
- Sell many low-priced items such as $2 to $4 printables; the fixed fee per sale hurts.
- Need built-in buyer search. Etsy brings more marketplace traffic for printables and templates; see how to sell digital products on Etsy.
- Sell PLR, resell-rights files or AI services, which Gumroad doesn't allow.
- Want the lowest per-sale fee at higher volume. Other merchant-of-record tools charge less per sale; compare the platforms in where to sell digital products.

Frequently asked questions
Is Gumroad free to use?
There is no monthly fee or setup cost. Gumroad takes a fee only when you sell: as of 2026, 10% plus $0.50 per direct sale plus card processing, or 30% on sales through its Discover marketplace.
Is Gumroad legit and safe for sellers?
Yes, Gumroad is an established platform that processes card payments through Stripe and verifies sellers' identities. Expect an account review before your first payouts and follow its rules on what you can sell, or products can be removed.
Do I need a business to sell on Gumroad?
No. You can sell as an individual. In the US, Gumroad asks for your Social Security number for payouts, and any profit is taxable income whether or not you receive a Form 1099-K.
Does Gumroad bring you customers?
Only partly. Products can appear in Gumroad Discover, its marketplace, but most sellers get most sales from their own audience, email list, social media or search traffic.
Can I sell PLR products on Gumroad?
No. Gumroad's rules say you cannot resell products you didn't create, and they name ebooks sold with resell rights (PLR or MRR) as an example of what is not allowed.
