How to Sell Digital Products on Etsy (Step by Step)

Sell digital products on Etsy the right way: the rules for digital items and AI, the fees per sale, file limits, listing setup and how buyers find you.

By Updated 7 min read

Quick summary (TL;DR)

  • To sell digital products on Etsy you open a shop, create a listing marked as a digital item, upload up to five files, and Etsy delivers them automatically after payment.
  • As of 2026, Etsy charges a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee and a payment processing fee, plus 15% on sales attributed to Offsite Ads for smaller shops.
  • Etsy only accepts digital downloads that are your own original content, and items made with AI must be disclosed in the listing description.
  • Etsy collects and remits VAT on digital items bought by EU buyers, which removes one big tax headache for small sellers.
  • Listing is fast; getting found is slow, and many listings sell little, so plan to test and improve titles, images and niches for months.

Steps at a glance

  1. 1Check Etsy's rules for your product. Confirm the product is your own original design, disclose any AI use, and avoid trademarks or content you don't have rights to.
  2. 2Open and set up your shop. Create the shop, add payment and billing details, and write short shop policies covering digital downloads and refunds.
  3. 3Prepare the files. Export print-ready or ready-to-use files, name them clearly, and keep up to five files of 20MB or less per listing.
  4. 4Create the listing. Choose digital as the item type, write a specific title and description, add clear preview images, and upload the files.
  5. 5Price with the fees in mind. Work out what you keep after the listing, transaction, processing and possible Offsite Ads fees before you set a price.
  6. 6Publish, measure and improve. Track views, favorites and sales per listing, and improve titles, tags and images on listings that get views but no sales.

To sell digital products on Etsy, you open a shop, create a listing marked as a digital item, upload your files, and Etsy delivers them to the buyer automatically after payment. The setup takes an afternoon; the real work is choosing a product Etsy allows, pricing it with the fees in mind, and getting it found among many similar listings.

Etsy is a sensible first platform because buyers already go there looking for printables, planners and templates. That same demand draws a lot of sellers, so expect to test and improve for months rather than days. If you're still deciding whether Etsy fits your plan at all, our overview of how to sell digital products puts it next to the other options.

Step 1: What digital products does Etsy allow?

Etsy allows digital downloads that are your own original work. Its Creativity Standards describe digital items as "original content created by the seller", sold as a digital download, and its Seller Policy says everything listed must be made, designed, handpicked or sourced by the seller.

In practice, that means:

  • Allowed: printables, planners, templates, digital art, patterns, presets, guides and similar files you designed.
  • AI-assisted work is allowed with disclosure. Etsy says sellers must disclose in the listing description when an item is created with the use of AI.
  • Not allowed: AI prompt bundles sold on their own, resold files you didn't create, and anything that infringes someone else's trademark or copyright (brand logos, characters, song lyrics, celebrity images).

If you were planning to sell PLR or resell-rights files, read what PLR is first; those products don't fit Etsy's rules for digital items.

Step 2: How much does Etsy charge for digital products?

As of 2026, Etsy's Fees & Payments Policy lists these charges that affect digital sellers:

  • Listing fee: $0.20 per listing. Listings expire after four months, so keeping one live means renewing it.
  • Transaction fee: 6.5% of the item price.
  • Payment processing: varies by country. In the US it's 3% plus $0.25; in the UK 4% plus £0.20; many EU countries 4% plus €0.30, according to Etsy's Payments Policy.
  • Offsite Ads: 15% of the order total when a sale is attributed to an Etsy ad on another site, or 12% for shops that have made $10,000 or more in a 365-day period. Shops under that level can opt out, according to Etsy's help center.
  • Currency conversion: 2.5% if you list in a currency different from your payment account's.

What you keep per sale (hypothetical, US seller)

Item priceListing feeTransaction fee (6.5%)Processing (3% + $0.25)You keepIf sold via Offsite Ads (15%)
$4$0.20$0.26$0.37$3.17$2.57
$10$0.20$0.65$0.55$8.60$7.10
$25$0.20$1.63$1.00$22.17$18.42

Illustrative math that ignores sales tax, currency conversion and income tax. Notice how the fixed parts hit cheap items hardest: on the $4 item, about a fifth of the price goes to fees. Our guide on how to price digital products goes deeper.

Step 3: How do you prepare the files?

Etsy's help center says a digital listing can hold up to five files, each up to 20MB. File names can't be edited after upload, so name them clearly first (for example, weekly-planner-us-letter.pdf).

Good practice for digital files:

  • Offer the sizes buyers need. For printables, US Letter for North American buyers and A4 for most others.
  • Use PDF for printables, with fonts embedded, so they print as designed.
  • Include a short "start here" page with printing or editing instructions and your license terms.
  • For larger products, compress files into ZIP folders or deliver a PDF that contains links. For Canva templates, the delivered file is usually a PDF with the template link inside; see how to sell Canva templates for Canva's licensing rules.
  • Test the download yourself before publishing: open every file on a phone and a computer.

We cover sizes, margins and export settings in how to make printables to sell.

Step 4: How do you create a digital listing that sells?

When you create the listing, choose digital as the item type so Etsy knows to deliver files instead of shipping. Then focus on the parts buyers actually see.

Title and tags

Write the title the way a buyer would search: product type first, then who it's for and the key detail. "Homeschool weekly planner printable, 5-day, US Letter and A4" beats a clever brand name. Use all the tags Etsy allows with different phrases buyers might type, rather than repeating the same word.

Preview images

Images do most of the selling on Etsy. Include:

  • A clean main image that shows the product clearly at thumbnail size.
  • Inside pages or screens, so buyers see exactly what they get.
  • A "what's included" image: number of pages, sizes, formats.
  • An image that states plainly "digital download, nothing will be shipped".

Mockups (your design placed in a realistic scene) help, but only use mockup files whose license allows commercial use.

Description

Answer every question before it's asked: what's included, file formats, sizes, which app is needed (Canva, Notion, Excel, Google Sheets), how to print or edit, what's not included, and your license terms. If AI tools were used, say so here.

Shop policies and reviews

Buyers can't return a download, so write a short, clear policy on what happens if a file is broken or the wrong size (usually: you fix it or resend it quickly). Reviews matter more for digital items than most sellers expect: Etsy's Seller Policy says buyers of digital content can leave a review within 100 days of first download or 12 months of purchase, whichever comes first. A friendly message after purchase with printing tips often prevents the confused buyer who leaves one star because the file "didn't print right".

Step 5: What about taxes on Etsy digital sales?

Etsy handles part of the tax work, but not all of it.

  • EU buyers: Etsy collects and remits VAT on digital items bought by EU buyers, whether or not you're based in the EU, when the sale goes through Etsy Payments.
  • US buyers: in states with marketplace facilitator laws, Etsy calculates, collects and remits sales tax on orders, according to Etsy's help center. Rules for digital goods vary by state.
  • Your income tax: your profit is still reportable where you live. In the US, UK, Canada and Australia, check your tax authority's guidance for self-employment or side income.

Step 6: How do buyers find your Etsy listings?

Mostly through Etsy search, which is also why this step takes the longest. There is no switch that makes a new listing rank.

What tends to help over time:

  • Specific niches where you're one of dozens of sellers, not thousands.
  • Several related listings rather than one, so buyers who find one see the others.
  • Reviews, which only come from sales, so early sales from your own channels (Pinterest, a small email list, relevant communities) can help.
  • Etsy Ads, carefully. They cost money per click and don't fix a weak listing. Test with a small daily budget on listings that already convert.
  • Iterating on data. In your shop stats, a listing with views but no favorites or sales usually has an image or price problem; one with no views has a search problem.

Most listings sell little in their first months, and some never sell. That's normal, not a sign you should quit after two weeks. For outside-Etsy traffic ideas, see how to market digital products with no audience.

What can you realistically expect?

StageTypical timeWhat happens
Research and first product1–3 weeksYou pick a niche and build a solid first listing set
LaunchA day or twoListings go live; views are usually low
Early months1–6 monthsA few sales for some sellers; many listings get none
IterationOngoingYou double down on what gets views and sales, and drop what doesn't

Illustrative ranges, not averages. Results depend on your niche, product quality, pricing and consistency.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth selling digital products on Etsy?

It can be, because buyers already search Etsy for printables, planners and templates. The same popularity makes those categories crowded, so results depend on picking a specific niche and making listings that stand out.

How much does Etsy take from a digital sale?

As of 2026, a US seller pays a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee and 3% plus $0.25 in payment processing. On a hypothetical $10 printable that is about $1.40, before any Offsite Ads fee.

Can I sell AI-generated digital products on Etsy?

Etsy allows items made with AI tools when they come from your own original prompts or inputs, but you must disclose AI use in the listing description. Selling AI prompt bundles on their own is not allowed.

Can I sell PLR or resell-rights products on Etsy?

Etsy's Creativity Standards say digital downloads must be original content created by the seller, so reselling ready-made PLR or MRR files doesn't fit those rules.

How many files can an Etsy digital listing have?

Etsy's help center says you can upload up to five files per digital listing, each up to 20MB. For bigger products, sellers often compress files or deliver a PDF containing links.
