Yes, you can sell Canva templates, as long as they are your own original designs and you follow Canva's licensing rules, especially for Pro content. Can you sell Canva templates legally?

Yes. Canva's Content License Agreement permits templates as a product you can design and sell, and its help center spells out the conditions. Two rules sit above everything else:

• It must be an original design. You combine elements, text, layout and your own creative effort into something new. Reselling a Canva template as-is, or with a color swap, isn't allowed.
• No standalone content. Canva says using an element in its original form, only filtered, recolored, resized or cropped, or with just a border added, counts as standalone use, and you can't sell that.

What counts as a "template"?

Canva defines a template as a design with a set layout and style meant to be edited or customized by the buyer to produce their final document. A wedding invitation is a template, because the buyer fills in the details. An ebook is not, even if it has spaces to write in, because it's a finished product. That distinction matters because the Pro content rules below apply differently to templates.

What does Canva's license allow for templates?

The key question is what's inside your design: free content, Pro content, or only things you made or uploaded yourself.

Pro content: the rule that catches people

The help center says it plainly: you can only use Pro content in templates if they're shared as Canva template links, and you can't sell templates with Pro content as a PDF or any other file type. If you want to sell a downloadable file, build it only from free content and your own uploads, and double-check that no Pro element slipped in.

What can't you sell with Canva content?

Beyond reselling Canva's templates, several things are off-limits or restricted:

• Clipart, stickers or graphics packs for use outside Canva. Canva's help center says you can't use free or Pro content to make and sell your own stock content; you'd need to create it from scratch.
• Single elements on products, such as one Canva illustration on a t-shirt or poster.
• Branded, Disney and Education content have their own restrictions in the license, including no commercial use for several of them.
• Trademarks, logos and characters you don't own. The license says Canva gives no rights to trademarks, logos or people that appear in content.

For designs you make for a client rather than for resale, Canva says you can transfer a finished design to one client only, not sell the same design to several.

How do Canva template links work?

A template link lets anyone who opens it make their own copy of your design to edit, without changing your original. According to Canva's help page on template links, you create one from the design's Share menu by choosing Template link, then Create template link, then Copy.

Things to know before you rely on it:

• You need an eligible plan to create links. Canva lists Pro, Teams, Enterprise, Education and Nonprofits.
• Buyers with free accounts can generally open them. The exception: if you create the link from a work email domain, recipients on that same domain need a paid plan.
• Deleting a link breaks it for every buyer. If you create a new link, it gets a new URL, so you'd have to resend it to past customers. Keep a master copy of each product design and don't delete its link.
• Be upfront about Pro elements. If your template uses any, say so in the listing, and test the link from a free account to see exactly what a free-plan buyer gets.

How do you create Canva templates people want to buy?

Start from a buyer with a recurring task, not from a design style.
