Etsy Shop Names: How to Choose (or Change) Yours

Etsy shop names: Etsy's 4-20 character rules, how to brainstorm a name that lasts, trademark checks, and how to change your shop name later.

By Updated 8 min read

Quick summary (TL;DR)

  • Etsy shop names must be 4 to 20 characters, with no spaces, special characters or profanity, not already used on Etsy and not infringing anyone's trademark.
  • The best Etsy shop names are short, easy to spell and say, and broad enough to fit the products you may add later.
  • Before you commit, check availability on Etsy, search your country's trademark database, and look at matching domains and social handles.
  • As of 2026, Etsy lets you change your shop name as often as you like before opening and up to 5 times after, with old links redirecting automatically.
  • Your shop name is mainly for buyers and branding; Etsy's published search guidance focuses on listings, not shop names.

Etsy shop names are the 4 to 20 character names that identify your shop and become part of its web address, such as etsy.com/shop/YourShopName. A good one is easy to remember and spell, fits what you sell now and later, and doesn't borrow anyone else's brand.

You can change it later, so this isn't a decision to agonize over for weeks. But a name that clashes with a trademark, or that boxes you into one product, creates work down the road. Here's how Etsy's rules work, how to brainstorm, what to check, and how to change a name you've outgrown.

What are Etsy's rules for shop names?

As of 2026, Etsy's help center says shop names must be 4 to 20 characters long, with no spaces or special characters, no profanity, not already used by an Etsy member, and not infringing someone else's trademark. Letters and numbers are what's left, and you can capitalize letters to separate words.

The details that catch people out, from Etsy's pages on opening a shop and changing your shop name:

RuleWhat it means in practice
4 to 20 charactersLong phrases won't fit; aim well under the limit
No spaces or punctuationUse capitals instead: MapleLedgerPrints, not "maple ledger prints"
Must be unusedA name used on any open shop can't be reused, even after that shop closes
Your own past namesYou can't reuse a name from another account of yours, even a closed one
No trademark infringementBrand, character and celebrity names are out
Becomes your URLYour shop appears at etsy.com/shop/shopname and shopname.etsy.com

Your shop name is also separate from your username: Etsy says you can't change your username, and you can't sign in with your shop name if it differs from it.

The name is one small piece of starting a shop. For the bigger picture of products, pricing and traffic, see our guide to selling digital products.

What makes a good Etsy shop name?

A good Etsy shop name is short, easy to say and spell, and broad enough to grow with your shop. Buyers mostly see it on listings, receipts and reviews, so clarity beats cleverness.

Criteria worth checking:

  • Say it out loud. If someone hears it, can they type it correctly? Unusual spellings and doubled letters where words join (as in a hypothetical "GlassStudio") lead to typos and lost visitors.
  • Leave room to grow. "WeddingInvitesByAna" fits until you add baby shower printables. A name built around a style or a feeling travels further than one tied to a single product.
  • Stay well under 20 characters. Shorter names are easier to remember and fit better on logos and file names.
  • Avoid trends and dates. A year or a passing meme ages fast.
  • Match the buyer's mood. A shop selling budget spreadsheets and one selling whimsical nursery art need different tones.

Does an Etsy shop name need keywords?

Not really. Etsy's published guidance on how search works focuses on listing titles, tags, attributes, categories, photos and shop quality, and its search visibility page checks things like a shop logo, not the name. Put your keywords where Etsy says they matter; our guide to Etsy SEO tips covers titles, tags and attributes in detail.

For Google, a separate shop title is the better tool. Etsy says it can be up to 55 characters, sits under your shop name, and influences how your shop appears in search results. A plain description works: "Printable planners for teachers and homeschool families".

How do you come up with Etsy shop name ideas?

Use a few naming patterns, write 20 to 30 options quickly, then cut hard. Online name generators can spark ideas, but treat their output as raw material, since popular suggestions are often taken.

PatternExample (hypothetical)StrengthWatch out for
Your name + craft wordAnaRuizStudioPersonal, flexiblePrivacy; harder to sell the shop later
Two unrelated wordsFigAndLanternMemorable, brandableSays nothing about the product

Niche + formatTeacherDeskPrintsClear to the right buyerLimits future products

Example names above are illustrations of each pattern, not recommendations; any of them may already be taken.

A short process that works for most people:

  1. List 10 words about your style, buyer and products.
  2. Combine them using the patterns above until you have 20 or more candidates.
  3. Cut anything over about 15 characters, hard to spell, or tied to one product you might drop.
  4. Sleep on the top three, then say them to someone and ask them to type what they heard.

If you're still deciding what to sell under the name, best things to sell on Etsy helps you choose first, which makes naming easier.

How do you check that a name is available and safe to use?

Check Etsy first, then trademarks, then the rest of the web. Ten minutes of checking can save a forced rename later.

  1. Etsy availability. Type the name during shop setup. If it's taken, Etsy shows available suggestions and holds your chosen name while you finish opening the shop.
  2. Trademark search. In the US, the USPTO's trademark search lets you look up registered and pending marks. The USPTO stresses searching for similar marks, not just identical ones, because confusion is the issue. In the UK, Canada and Australia, use the national IP office's search (UK IPO, CIPO and IP Australia).
  3. Google and social media. Search the name with your product type. A similar business in your niche is a red flag even without a registered trademark.
  4. Domain and handles. If you might want your own site later, see whether a matching domain and social handles are available.

Not legal advice

A clean search lowers risk but doesn't remove it. If you plan to invest heavily in a brand, a trademark attorney or your national IP office's guidance is the right next step.

Etsy also notes that if you hold the rights to a name someone else is already using on Etsy, you can contact them or file an intellectual property notice, but filing that notice won't free up the shop name for you.

How do you change your Etsy shop name?

On Etsy.com, go to Shop Manager, select Settings, then Your shop, choose Edit under Shop name, enter the new name and save. Before your shop opens, you can change the name as often as you like.

Once the shop is open, Etsy's name-change help page says (as of 2026):

  • You can change your shop name up to 5 times in settings; after that, changes need approval from Etsy Support.
  • Capitalization changes and switching back to a previous shop name don't count toward that limit.
  • Your shop URL updates, and links to the old name redirect automatically.
  • Nobody else can use your previous name.
  • An icon appears next to your shop name for 45 days so buyers know the name changed.

After a change, update everything that still shows the old name: logo, banner, announcement, About section, and any PDFs, instructions or watermarks inside your digital files. Outside Etsy, update links on social profiles, Pinterest pins and email signatures; the redirect helps, but direct links are cleaner.

When is a name change worth it?

Changing names is reasonable when the old one no longer fits your products, is hard to spell, or raises a trademark concern. It's rarely a fix for low sales: if listings aren't getting views or purchases, the cause is usually the product, the listings or the niche. Our guide to digital product mistakes lists the usual suspects.

Do you need a DBA or a trademark for your Etsy shop name?

Etsy doesn't require either, but local rules might. In many US states, doing business under a name other than your legal name means registering a DBA (also called an assumed or trade name). Requirements vary by state and city, so check locally; our article on whether you need a business license to sell on Etsy explains where to look.

Choosing a shop name on Etsy doesn't register it as a trademark. Registering one is a separate process with your national IP office, with its own fees and requirements. Most new sellers start without it and revisit the question once the shop has proved itself.

Frequently asked questions

What are the rules for Etsy shop names?

Etsy says shop names must be 4 to 20 characters, with no spaces or special characters, no profanity, not already in use by an Etsy member, and not infringing another's trademark. You can use capital letters to separate words.

Can you change your Etsy shop name?

Yes. Before your shop opens you can change it as often as you like; after it opens you can change it up to 5 times in Shop Manager settings, and further changes need approval from Etsy Support.

What happens to my old Etsy shop URL if I change my name?

Etsy says links to your previous shop name redirect automatically to the new one, other sellers can't take the old name, and a change icon shows next to your shop name for 45 days.

Should my Etsy shop name include keywords?

It doesn't need to. Etsy's search guidance centers on listing titles, tags, attributes and quality, so use your listings for keywords and pick a shop name buyers can remember.

Can I use a name that's already a brand?

No. Etsy requires that a shop name doesn't infringe another's trademark, and using a known brand name can also lead to legal trouble outside Etsy. Search trademark databases before you decide.
