How to Make Money in Retirement: Flexible, Low-Risk Work That Protects Your Benefits

Retirement income can stretch further with a few hours of paid work a week, but the wrong move can cost you: benefits withheld, higher Medicare premiums, or savings lost to an 'opportunity' that was a scam. The free plan below shows how to choose work that uses the experience you already have, keep upfront costs near zero and check the benefit rules before you earn. Most people start small, and earnings usually build over months.

The short answer

The safest way to make money in retirement is to sell skills and time you already have, such as consulting or freelancing in your former field, tutoring, part-time or seasonal work, or pet and house sitting, rather than putting savings into a business or 'opportunity'. Before you start, check how earnings interact with your benefits: as of 2026, if you're under full retirement age all year, Social Security withholds $1 for every $2 of wages or net self-employment profit above $24,480, and the limit no longer applies once you reach full retirement age.

Part of our honest guide to making money online.

Sound familiar?

Why most people never get started — or quit early

You're worried work will shrink your Social Security

You've heard that earning 'too much' cuts your benefits, but not where the line is, whether self-employment counts or whether the money comes back later.

You can't afford to lose savings on a bad idea

Franchises, inventory, 'business in a box' kits and trading courses all ask for money up front. At this stage of life, a loss is much harder to recover from.

Retirees are a favorite target for scammers

Fake job offers, investment pitches on social media and tech-support calls all aim at people with savings. The FTC says reported fraud losses among adults 60 and over grew about fourfold from 2020 to 2024.

You want flexibility, not a second career

You want to keep time for family, travel and health, with work that bends around your life instead of fixed full-time shifts.

The turning point

Why this approach works

Earning in retirement works best when it is low-risk, flexible and planned around your benefits. This approach is built on those three rules, not on finding a hot opportunity.

01

Experience over investment

You start from skills you've used for decades, such as managing, teaching, bookkeeping, a trade or customer care, so you can earn without buying inventory, equipment or a franchise.

02

Benefits checked before the first paycheck

You estimate what you'll earn this year against the Social Security earnings test, Medicare premium brackets and taxes, and set your hours so the extra income is worth it.

03

Scam filters built in

You follow simple rules: never pay to get a job, never move money for an employer, and never act on an investment pitch from someone you met online. These cut out the most common ways retirees lose money.

How this is different: Most 'retirement income' content mixes investing tips with business pitches that need upfront cash. This plan focuses on earning from your time and experience with almost nothing at risk, and checks the government rules first.

How it works

Your first steps

  1. 1

Decide how much you want to earn and why

Set a modest yearly goal and check it against the Social Security earnings test if you're under full retirement age, and against Medicare premium brackets if your total income is high.

  2. 2

List the skills people already paid you for

Your former job, trade, hobbies and volunteer roles all count. Pick one or two that could become consulting, tutoring, freelance or part-time work.

  3. 3

Choose the format that fits your week

Compare a part-time or seasonal job, freelance or consulting work you control, and local services such as pet sitting. Our guide to work from home jobs for seniors covers remote options.

  4. 4

Start small and check every offer

Take one client or a few hours a week, keep records from the first payment, and walk away from any offer that asks you to pay, cash a check or buy gift cards or crypto.

The skills involved

What you'll need to learn

Work within the Social Security earnings test

As of 2026, the limit is $24,480 if you're under full retirement age all year, with $1 withheld for every $2 above it. In the year you reach full retirement age it is $65,160, with $1 withheld for every $3, counting only months before that birthday. Wages and net self-employment profit count; pensions, interest and investment income don't. SSA recalculates your benefit at full retirement age to credit months that were withheld.

Understand Medicare premiums and income

Higher income can raise Medicare Part B and Part D premiums through IRMAA. For 2026, the surcharge starts above $109,000 of modified adjusted gross income for individuals or $218,000 for joint filers, generally based on your tax return from two years earlier.

Handle self-employment tax at any age

Freelance and consulting profit of $400 or more a year is generally subject to US self-employment tax, even if you already collect benefits. Keep receipts and set money aside for taxes.

Know the rules outside the US

UK: the State Pension isn't reduced by earnings and you stop paying National Insurance after State Pension age, though income tax still applies. Canada: working doesn't reduce your CPP retirement pension. Australia: the Age Pension has an income test, softened for work income by the Work Bonus.

Turn experience into a clear offer

Package what you know as a simple service with a price, such as hourly consulting, bookkeeping for small businesses or tutoring a subject, and describe it in plain words.

Spot scams that target retirees

Recognize fake job offers, task scams, government and tech-support impersonators and investment pitches. Read how to tell if an online job is a scam and report fraud to the FTC.

Use simple online tools with confidence

Video calls, shared documents, invoicing and freelance platforms are what most flexible work runs on now; a few hours of practice makes them routine.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How much can I earn in retirement without losing Social Security?

As of 2026, if you're under full retirement age all year, SSA withholds $1 for every $2 you earn above $24,480. In the year you reach full retirement age the limit is $65,160 with $1 withheld for every $3, and from the month you reach it there's no limit. See how passive income affects Social Security.

Do I lose the Social Security benefits that are withheld?

Not entirely. SSA says that when you reach full retirement age, it recalculates your benefit to give you credit for the months it withheld because of your earnings.

Does working in retirement affect Medicare?

Earnings don't take away Medicare, but higher total income can raise your Part B and Part D premiums. For 2026, the surcharge applies above $109,000 of modified adjusted gross income for individuals or $218,000 for joint filers, generally based on your return from two years earlier.

What are good part-time jobs for retirees?

Ones that use experience you can prove: consulting, bookkeeping, tutoring, customer support with flexible shifts, seasonal work and local services like pet sitting. Our guides to part-time work from home jobs and the step-by-step side hustle guide compare options.

How do I avoid scams when looking for work in retirement?

Never pay to get a job, never deposit a check and send money back, and never buy crypto or gift cards for an employer or 'investment'. The FTC says older adults lost far more to investment scams than to any other type in 2024, often after being contacted on social media.

What exactly is The Honest Guide to Making Money Online?

It's a beginner-friendly ebook that compares realistic ways to earn money online — freelancing, remote work, side hustles, affiliate marketing, digital products, AI tools, selling online and other legitimate paths. For each one it explains how it works, what it may cost to start, the skills involved, common mistakes and practical first steps. It's an overview to help you choose, not a specialist manual on a single method.

Who is it for?

Beginners who want an honest map before they spend time or money — people with a job, students, parents at home — and who are willing to put in consistent effort. It is not for anyone looking for a shortcut.

How long until I see results?

It varies a lot and depends on your skills, effort, market and execution. Many beginners need weeks to months of consistent work before earning anything meaningful, and some never do. Anyone promising fixed results or timelines is not being honest with you.

How much does it cost?

The price is shown at checkout in your own currency, as a one-time payment. Several of the methods in the ebook can be started with little or no money beyond a phone or computer; paid tools are explained with their real costs before you decide.

How do I get it after buying?

Payment and delivery are handled by Hotmart. After checkout you receive an email with access to the ebook, available right away.

Is there a guarantee?

Yes. You have a 7-day money-back guarantee under Hotmart's refund policy. If it isn't for you, request a refund within 7 days of purchase and you get your money back.

Can I read it on my phone?

Yes. It's a digital ebook you can read on a phone, tablet or computer.

Is this legit or a scam?

The ebook is sold through Hotmart, a large digital-products platform, and comes with a money-back guarantee. It doesn't promise income — it explains methods, costs and risks so you can decide for yourself.
