Part-Time Work From Home Jobs: Where to Find Real Ones

Part time work from home jobs are remote roles with fewer hours than a full-time schedule, and real ones exist in tutoring, customer support, administrative and virtual assistant work, transcription, bookkeeping and seasonal support. In US labor statistics, anyone who usually works fewer than 35 hours a week counts as part time.

The catch is that genuine part-time remote openings are popular, so they draw many applicants, and "flexible part-time hours from home" is also one of the most common scam pitches. This guide covers which roles really come in part-time versions, where employers post them, what the official pay data say as of 2026, and how to check an offer before you accept.

What counts as part-time work from home?

Part-time simply means fewer hours than the employer's full-time schedule. The BLS uses "fewer than 35 hours per week" for its surveys, but the US Department of Labor notes that the Fair Labor Standards Act "does not define full-time employment or part-time employment", which is "a matter generally to be determined by the employer."

In practice, part-time remote work comes in three forms:

• Part-time employee: set or semi-set hours, a paycheck with taxes withheld, and whatever benefits the employer offers.
• Freelance or contract: you set your hours and find your own clients, but you handle your own taxes and income varies month to month.
• Seasonal: extra support staff hired for busy periods, such as the holidays or tax season, often part time and temporary.

Knowing which one you're applying for changes what to check in the offer.

Which part-time work from home jobs are real?

The roles below are common part-time remote options. Pay is the US median for each whole occupation from the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook (May 2025), remote and on-site combined.

Tutoring

Tutoring is the most naturally part-time remote job: the BLS says tutors typically work part time and may work evenings and weekends, with extra demand before exams. The Handbook also expects little or no employment change from 2025 to 2035 and says generative AI will "somewhat reduce the need for tutors", so proven subject expertise matters.

Part-time customer support

Admin and virtual assistant work

The BLS notes that "some administrative assistants work out of their own homes as virtual assistants." Part-time VA work is usually freelance: you find clients who need a set number of hours a week for email, scheduling, documents or bookkeeping support.

Transcription and bookkeeping

Both are screen-based and can be done in blocks of time. Transcription increasingly means editing speech-recognition drafts, and the BLS projects the occupation to decline 4%. Bookkeeping clerks as employees mostly work full time, but some small businesses need only a few hours a month from a freelance bookkeeper.

Where do you find real part-time remote jobs?

The best leads come from places where the employer is identifiable. Search in this order:

1. Your current or past employer. Asking to move to part-time remote in a job you already do is often the easiest route.
2. Employer career pages. Tutoring companies, software and e-commerce support teams, and healthcare billing offices list part-time roles directly.
3. Job boards with filters. Combine the "part-time" job type filter with "remote", then read each posting for location limits.
4. Government job banks. Public-sector part-time and telework roles are posted on official sites such as USAJOBS in the US.
5. Staffing agencies. Many companies hire seasonal and part-time support through agencies, which don't charge job seekers.
6. Freelance marketplaces, for VA, bookkeeping, writing and design work, if you're ready to find your own clients.

How much can you earn from part-time remote work?

Your income depends on two numbers: the hourly rate and the hours you actually get. Part-time schedules can vary week to week, so plan around the minimum, not the maximum.

Example (hypothetical): a part-time chat support job pays $17 an hour and schedules you for 20 hours a week. Before taxes, that's $340 a week, or about $1,470 a month. If slow weeks drop you to 12 hours, the same job brings in $204 that week.

A few things change the math:

• Freelance rates look higher but cover unpaid time: finding clients, admin, and your own taxes and equipment.
• Seasonal work ends. Budget for the months without it.
• Benefits vary. Many part-time roles offer fewer benefits than full-time ones, so compare the whole package.

What should you check in a part-time remote offer?

Part-time offers leave more room for surprises than full-time ones. Before you accept, get clear answers to these questions, ideally in writing:

• Minimum and maximum hours per week. "Up to 25 hours" can mean 5 in a slow week.
• Schedule: fixed shifts, a rota you pick from, or fully flexible?
• Employee or contractor? This changes taxes, benefits and legal protections.
• Pay rate and pay dates, including whether training time is paid.
• Equipment: does the employer provide a computer and headset, or do you use your own?
• Location limits: many remote employers can hire only in certain states or countries.

Part-time scams: the pitches to ignore

"Flexible hours, work from home, great pay" is a scammer's favorite line, because it sounds like exactly what busy people want.

Treat these as red flags:

• High pay for a few hours of simple tasks, far above the BLS medians above.
• Hired by text or chat app without a phone or video interview.
• Paying to start: for training, a starter kit, software or a "certification". The FTC says honest employers "will never ask you to pay to get a job."
• A check to buy equipment, with instructions to send part of the money on.
• Apps that pay you to like or rate things, then ask for a deposit to withdraw.

Part-time remote work outside the US

The job families are similar in the UK, Canada and Australia, but the rules around part-time employment differ.

• United Kingdom: GOV.UK says part-time workers are "protected from being treated less favourably than equivalent full-time workers", including on pay rates, holidays and training, with some benefits applied pro rata.
• Canada: employment standards are mostly set by each province and territory, so check your provincial rules.
• Australia: part-time and casual work carry different entitlements, so check the Fair Work Ombudsman's guidance on employee types before you accept.
