How to Sell on Whatnot: Getting Approved and Your First Show
How to sell on Whatnot: who can apply, how approval works, why applications get rejected, and how to run, ship and get paid for your first live show.
Quick summary (TL;DR)
- To sell on Whatnot, tap + Sell in the app, answer a short application about your experience and category, and enter your legal name and return address; many sellers get access within minutes.
- You must live in a supported country and verify your phone, payment method and government ID before going live; teens 13 to 17 need a verified parent or guardian account.
- Applications that need review are judged on inventory photos, links to other selling profiles and your reasons for joining, and a rejected seller can usually reapply after 30 days.
- In a show, the auction sells to the highest bid even if it's low, so set every starting bid at the lowest price you're happy to accept.
- Whatnot requires you to ship within two business days, and in the US your earnings usually become available up to 4 hours after the carrier confirms delivery.

Steps at a glance
- 1Check eligibility. Confirm you live in a country where Whatnot supports selling and that you're 18 or older, or have a verified parent or guardian account if you're 13 to 17.
- 2Apply in the app. Tap + Sell, answer the questions about your experience and main category, agree to the Community Guidelines and enter your legal name and return address.
- 3Verify and add a payout method. Verify your phone number, a payment method and a government-issued ID, then connect a bank account through Stripe Connect.
- 4Prepare your first show. Schedule a show, gather inventory, create listings, confirm you can print labels and set up your camera and lighting.
- 5Go live and sell. Run auctions, Buy It Now listings and optional giveaways, setting each starting bid at the lowest price you'd accept.
- 6Ship and get paid. Ship every order within two business days with a drop-off scan, then request a payout once earnings become available after delivery.
To sell on Whatnot, you create an account, tap + Sell in the app and complete a short seller application; many sellers get access within minutes, while others are reviewed by Whatnot's team. After approval, you verify your identity, schedule your first live show, sell by auction or fixed price on camera, and ship each order within two business days.
This guide covers the application, the reasons Whatnot turns sellers down, and what your first show and first payout look like, based on Whatnot's Help Center as of 2026. Rules change, so check the in-app checklist before you go live.
What do you need before you apply to sell on Whatnot?
You need to live in a supported country, meet the age rules and have enough inventory to sell live on a regular basis. You'll also need a phone, a bank account in your registration country and a government-issued ID for verification.
As of 2026, Whatnot accepts sellers in:
- North America: United States (including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands) and Canada
- Europe: United Kingdom, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands
- Asia-Pacific: Australia, plus Japan as a limited pilot
Account holders must be 18 or older. Teens aged 13 to 17 can sell only with a parent's or guardian's permission, through a verified parent or guardian account and a special application.
The harder requirement is inventory. Whatnot says it looks for evidence that you have enough stock to go live consistently, so a handful of items rarely works. If you're still deciding what to sell and where to buy it, our guide to reselling for profit walks through choosing a category and sourcing before you apply anywhere.
How do you apply to sell on Whatnot?
The application takes a few minutes in the Whatnot app. Here's the sequence Whatnot describes:
- Start the application. Open the app, tap + Sell at the bottom of the screen, then Get Started.
- Agree to the Community Guidelines.
- Choose your primary category and answer a few questions about your selling history.
- Describe your experience. Pick the option that fits, whether you're brand new or already selling elsewhere.
- Enter your return address and your full legal name exactly as it appears on your ID. Whatnot uses the address to calculate buyers' shipping costs. After approval you can switch to a business name or a PO box in Seller Hub.
- Submit. Many sellers unlock access within minutes; if yours needs more review, Whatnot emails you.
Verification before your first show
Before you go live, you must complete seller verification: a one-time code to your phone, a verified payment method, and a photo of a government-issued ID such as a driver's license or passport, checked through Stripe or Persona. To get paid, you also connect a bank account through Stripe Connect. The bank account's country and currency must match your Whatnot registration, or payouts may fail.
Why do Whatnot seller applications get rejected?
Whatnot rejects applications mostly for missing evidence: thin inventory, unclear photos or no selling history. It says it judges each application as a whole, and the most common reasons are:
| Reason | What Whatnot looks for | How to fix it |
|---|---|---|
| Incomplete application | Working links to other selling profiles, inventory photos or video, a reason for joining | Fill in every field, including optional ones |
| Product quantity | Enough stock to go live consistently | Show your full inventory in the photos or video |
| Product quality | Clear images of the actual items you'll sell | Display items the way you'd show them on stream |
| Lack of selling experience | E-commerce history in your category | Link eBay, Mercari, Poshmark or a store, or show offline sales |
| Unsupported country or products | Supported location and permitted items | Remove unsupported products from your application |
In most cases you can reapply 30 days after the decision. Some outcomes are permanent: misrepresenting inventory or profiles, counterfeit products, outstanding Trust and Safety violations, inappropriate content, or a poor reputation on other platforms.
Categories that need extra approval
Even after approval, a few gated categories need a separate application, including Luxury Bags and Accessories, Supplements, and Meat and Seafood or Specialty Food. As of 2026, Whatnot says it isn't accepting new applications for Surprise Sets in Sneakers and Streetwear or in Bags and Accessories. You apply by scheduling a show or listing a product in that category and following the prompts.
How do you prepare your first Whatnot show?
Once you have access, schedule your first show: pick a date and time, a main category and a thumbnail that clearly shows what you're selling. Whatnot says you unlock full Seller Hub tools after completing your first-show checklist and going live.
Before showtime, work through this list:
- Gather inventory and put it in the order you plan to sell it.
- Create product listings in your shop, with honest condition notes.
- Confirm you can print shipping labels. A thermal label printer saves time once orders pile up.
- Set up camera and lighting. You don't need to show your face; many sellers point the camera at the items only.
- Practice in Rehearsal Mode, which lets you run simulated auctions and pin items before a real audience arrives.
- Share the show with people who already buy from you elsewhere, since a new account starts with few followers.
Price research matters more on Whatnot than on listing apps, because an auction can close in seconds. Look up recent sold prices for each item first; our guide on how to price items for resale shows how to find sold comps and a minimum you can live with.
What happens during a live Whatnot show?
During the show you run items one at a time as auctions, sell fixed-price Buy It Now items, and optionally run Flash Sales or giveaways. Auctions are the most common format.
Setting up each auction
For every auction you set a starting bid, an auction time and a counter-bid time, which resets the clock when a bid lands in the last 10 seconds. You can also choose Sudden Death, which ends the auction without adding time. Two rules catch beginners:
- The highest bid wins, even if it's low. Whatnot advises making the starting bid the lowest amount you're comfortable accepting.
- Once an auction starts, it can't be canceled or stopped.
If nobody bids, the item doesn't sell and you can run it again later.
Example (hypothetical): you start a jacket you paid $15 for at $1 to draw bidders, and only one person bids. You've sold a $15 item for $1, before fees. Starting it at $20 might mean no sale today, but no loss either.
Running giveaways by the rules
Giveaways attract viewers, but they cost you money and come with rules:
- You pay the shipping. Whatnot deducts giveaway shipping from your balance when the giveaway runs, and the item must ship within two business days.
- Disclose the prize in advance and never downgrade, withhold or change it based on who wins.
- No cash prizes except collectible currency, and no paid-entry raffles.
- Post official rules for promotions, including the statement "NO PURCHASE NECESSARY" where it applies. Buyer Appreciation Giveaways require a purchase, but US and Canadian users can enter free through a web form.
How do shipping and payouts work after the show?
You must ship every order within two business days, and you get paid once the buyer's package is delivered. Whatnot counts an order as shipped when it gets a drop-off scan, such as a carrier acceptance scan or a scan with the in-app scanner.
| Step | What Whatnot expects, as of 2026 |
|---|---|
| Ship | Within two business days of the sale, excluding weekends and holidays |
| Earnings available (US, Canada, Japan) | Up to 4 hours after the carrier confirms delivery |
| Earnings available with Early Payout | As soon as you generate the shipping label, once you qualify |
| Payout to your bank | Typically 1 to 2 business days in most countries; Australia 2 to 3, Canada 3 to 4 |
Early Payout is earned through your seller rating, a number of lifetime shows and a sales or order milestone shown in Seller Hub, so new sellers start on the standard timeline.
Canceling is costly. A seller cancellation for a reason within your control can carry a fee of $3 or 3% of the order total, whichever is higher, though your first one is waived. Confirm every item is in hand before you go live.
What you keep after commission and payment processing depends on your category and sales volume. We break it down with worked numbers in Whatnot fees. And if you or your buyers want to know how the platform protects each side, see is Whatnot legit.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get approved to sell on Whatnot?
Whatnot says many sellers unlock seller access within minutes of applying. Some applications need extra review, and Whatnot emails you with next steps when that happens.
Do you need selling experience to sell on Whatnot?
Not always, but it helps. Whatnot lists lack of relevant selling experience as a common reason for rejection, so links to eBay, Mercari or Poshmark profiles and clear photos of your inventory improve your chances.
Do you have to show your face on Whatnot?
No. Whatnot's Help Center says many sellers simply point the camera at the items they're selling instead of showing themselves.
Can you reapply if Whatnot rejects your application?
Usually yes, 30 days after the decision. Applications rejected for deception, counterfeit products, Trust and Safety violations or being under 13 can't reapply.
Who pays shipping for Whatnot giveaways?
The seller does. Whatnot deducts giveaway shipping from your seller balance when the giveaway runs, and the item must ship within two business days like any order.
