How to Create and Sell Digital Planners

How to sell digital planners in 2026: plan the pages, add hyperlinks that work in Goodnotes, check Canva's license, export, test and list them.

By Updated 8 min read

Quick summary (TL;DR)

  • A digital planner is a hyperlinked PDF that buyers import into a note-taking app such as Goodnotes and write on with a stylus, so it is built for a tablet screen, not for paper.
  • The hard part isn't the design but the link structure: tabs, an index and month, week and day pages that all jump to the right place.
  • If you design in Canva, check its license first: it says templates containing Pro content can only be sold as Canva template links, not as PDFs.
  • Test every link in the exported PDF inside the apps your buyers use before listing, and keep files within your platform's upload limits.
  • Planners are a crowded category, so a specific buyer and a clearly shown link structure matter more than decoration.

Steps at a glance

  1. 1Pick a buyer and a planner type. Choose one specific buyer and decide between dated or undated, and portrait or landscape, based on what similar buyers ask for in reviews.
  2. 2Map the link structure. Sketch the tabs, index and month, week and day pages, and how each page links back, before designing anything.
  3. 3Design the pages. Build reusable page layouts sized for a tablet screen, with writing space that fits a stylus.
  4. 4Add and test hyperlinks. Link every tab and index entry, export the PDF, and test each link in Goodnotes and the other apps you support.
  5. 5Check licenses. Confirm your design tool, fonts and graphics allow sale in a PDF product; with Canva, avoid Pro content in PDF planners.
  6. 6Package and list. Add a start-here guide on importing the file, keep files within upload limits, and list with previews that show the link structure.

To sell digital planners, you design a hyperlinked PDF for tablet note-taking apps like Goodnotes, test that every tab and link works, check that your fonts and graphics are licensed for sale, and list it on a marketplace such as Etsy or your own checkout page. Learning how to sell digital planners is mostly about structure and testing: the design takes days, but broken links and unclear instructions are what cause bad reviews.

This guide covers what's specific to digital planners. For paper planners and other print-at-home files, see our guide on how to make printables to sell.

What is a digital planner, and how is it different from a printable?

A digital planner is a PDF designed to be written on with a stylus inside a note-taking app, with clickable tabs and links that jump between pages. A printable planner is designed for paper, so links don't matter and page size follows printer paper.

Many sellers offer both versions of the same design. Treat them as two products with separate files, previews and instructions. Our broader guide to selling digital products explains how planners fit next to other formats if you're still choosing what to make first.

Step 1: Who is your planner for?

Start with one buyer and one routine, then decide the format. "A digital planner" competes with a huge number of listings; "a digital planner for nursing students with rotation schedules and exam tracking" competes with far fewer.

Decide these early, because they change the whole file:

  • Dated or undated. Dated planners sell for a specific year and need a new edition every year. Undated planners last longer but feel less "done for you".
  • Portrait or landscape. Look at reviews of similar planners for complaints and requests.
  • Week start. Sunday and Monday starts are both expected; many sellers include both.
  • Sections that serve the buyer: class schedules, shift calendars, meal plans, budgets, habit trackers.

Read reviews on existing planners. Complaints like "links don't go back to the month" or "too few note pages" are a feature list for yours. Our list of digital product ideas has more buyer-specific angles.

Step 2: How do you plan and design the pages?

Map the structure before you design anything. A digital planner is a small website inside a PDF: every page needs a way back.

A typical structure:

  1. Cover and start-here page with instructions.
  2. Index linking to every section.
  3. Year overview linking to each month.
  4. Month pages linking to their weeks.
  5. Week pages linking to each day, if you include daily pages.
  6. Section pages such as notes, trackers and goals.
  7. Side or top tabs on every page for one-tap navigation.

Tools

You can design in Canva, Keynote, PowerPoint, Affinity or Adobe tools. What matters is that the tool can create internal page links that survive PDF export. Build a handful of master layouts (month, week, day, notes) and duplicate them, so a design change doesn't mean editing hundreds of pages by hand.

Design for a stylus

  • Leave generous writing space; handwriting on glass is larger than on paper.
  • Keep tabs large enough to tap without zooming.
  • Use calm backgrounds, so buyers' own stickers and handwriting stand out.
  • Keep page count sensible. A dated planner with daily pages runs to hundreds of pages, which makes the file heavy and slow in some apps.

The links must be built into the exported PDF; the note-taking app only follows them. Goodnotes' support page on PDF hyperlinks says links in imported PDFs can open another page in the document or an external website, giving a digital planner's index linking to monthly, weekly or daily pages as its example.

How buyers use them matters for your instructions:

  • On iOS, buyers select the linked text, image or planner element.
  • On Android, Windows and the web, Goodnotes says buyers enter Read Only Mode first, then select the link. In Edit Mode, they can press and hold a link and choose "Open Link".

Put those two lines in your start-here page. A buyer who stays in writing mode on those platforms can easily think the links are broken.

A testing routine

  1. Export the PDF.
  2. Import it into every app you list as supported, on the devices you can access.
  3. Tap every tab, index entry and calendar date, and the "back" links.
  4. Fix, export again and retest. Keep a checklist; one broken tab on page 214 is enough for a one-star review.

Step 4: What licensing rules apply to digital planners?

Every font, graphic and tool you use must allow commercial use in a downloadable product. Three checks matter most:

  • Canva content. Canva's help center says your product must be an original design and that templates with Pro content can only be sold as Canva template links, not as PDFs or other files. Canva defines a template as a design the end user edits to produce a final document. Whether a particular planner counts is a judgment call, so the cautious route for a PDF planner is to use only free content and elements you made yourself, or to ask Canva. We explain template links and the license in detail in how to sell Canva templates.
  • Fonts and clip art. Some licenses forbid embedding in products for sale or limit the number of sales. Keep the license files with your project.
  • Marketplace originality rules. Etsy's digital listings help page says digital items must be made or designed by you. Reselling a planner bought with resale rights or a lightly edited free template is a common reason listings are removed.

Also add a short license note to your file: personal use, no sharing or reselling the PDF.

Step 5: How do you export, package and deliver the planner?

  • Export as PDF with links enabled and fonts embedded. Check the file size; heavy images and hundreds of pages add up.
  • Respect upload limits. Etsy's help center says a digital listing takes up to five files, each up to 20MB. If your planner is bigger, split versions (Sunday and Monday start, light and dark) into separate files, or deliver through a platform with larger limits.
  • Include a start-here guide covering how to download, how to import into Goodnotes or other apps, and how to use links in Read Only Mode.
  • Add extras carefully. Sticker sheets and extra templates are popular, but each one is another file to test and support.

Remind buyers on Etsy that they download from the Purchases section of their account on a browser; Etsy's download help page notes that digital purchases can't be downloaded through the Etsy app.

Where can you sell digital planners?

WhereWhy sellers use itWatch out for
EtsyBuyers already search for digital plannersHeavy competition; listing and transaction fees on every sale
GumroadSimple checkout, handles sales tax as merchant of recordMost buyers come from traffic you send
PayhipStorefront that deposits sales to your Stripe or PayPal accountYou bring the traffic
Your own site with a checkoutFull control and your own email listYou handle tax, delivery and support

Price with fees in mind: fixed per-sale fees take a big share of low-priced files. Our guide on how to price digital products walks through the math, and our walkthrough of how to sell digital products on Etsy covers listing setup and tags.

Buyers can't tap your thumbnail, so show them what they get: a short video or GIF of tapping through tabs, a page-structure diagram, and a list of compatible apps. State clearly that it is a digital file and nothing ships.

What can you realistically expect from selling digital planners?

A first digital planner is a project of days to a few weeks, mostly spent on links and testing. Sales are not predictable: planners are among the most crowded digital categories, and many listings sell little or nothing. Results depend on the niche, previews, price and how much traffic you bring. Plan to improve the product from early reviews and support questions, and expect a dated planner to need a refresh every year.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a digital planner and a printable planner?

A printable planner is a PDF made to be printed on paper. A digital planner is a PDF designed for a tablet screen, with clickable tabs and links between pages, that buyers write on in a note-taking app.

Can I make a digital planner in Canva and sell it?

You can design one in Canva, but check Canva's rules first. As of 2026 its help center says templates with Pro content can only be sold as Canva template links, not as PDFs, so many sellers build PDF planners with free content and their own elements.

Do hyperlinks in a PDF planner work in Goodnotes?

Yes, if the links exist in the exported PDF. Goodnotes says hyperlinks in imported PDFs can open other pages or websites; on iOS you select the linked element, and on Android, Windows and the web you switch to Read Only Mode first.

Where is the best place to sell digital planners?

Etsy is the usual starting point because buyers search there for planners. Gumroad and Payhip work well if you bring your own traffic from Pinterest, a blog or short video.
