Remote Jobs for Military Spouses: Programs and Portable Careers
Remote jobs for military spouses: the free DoD programs, federal hiring rules, license portability and portable careers that survive a PCS move.
Quick summary (TL;DR)
- The best remote jobs for military spouses are with employers who don't care where you live, in roles whose license or skill set travels with you from one duty station to the next.
- SpouseWorks (formerly SECO) offers free career coaching through Military OneSource, and its MSEP job portal lists employers that have committed to hiring military spouses.
- MyCAA pays up to $4,000 toward a license, certification or associate degree for eligible spouses, with a cap of $2,000 per fiscal year.
- For federal jobs, the military spouse hiring authority lets agencies hire you noncompetitively, and OPM exempted military spouses in remote arrangements from the 2025 return-to-office push.
- A federal law lets many licensed spouses use their license in the new state after a PCS move, but remote work across state lines and overseas has extra rules to check first.

Remote jobs for military spouses are work-from-home roles you can keep through a permanent change of station (PCS), because the employer hires across states and the work doesn't depend on where you live. The strongest options pair a portable skill with free military spouse support: SpouseWorks career coaching, the MSEP employer network, MyCAA funding and a federal hiring authority built for spouses.
That matters because moving every few years is hard on careers. In the Defense Department's 2024 Active Duty Spouse Survey, the spouse unemployment rate was 20%, statistically unchanged from 21% in 2021, according to MOAA's summary of the results. Remote work doesn't fix every barrier, but it removes the one that hurts most: starting over after each move.
What makes a remote job portable for a military spouse?
A remote job is portable when three things travel with you: the employer's permission to work from your next location, any license the role needs, and your schedule. If one of the three breaks at a PCS, the job usually breaks too.
Check these before you apply, not after the orders arrive:
- Where the employer can hire. Many "remote" jobs are limited to certain states because of payroll, tax or licensing. Read the location line; "Remote, US" travels better than "Remote, Texas only".
- Whether a state license is required. Roles like nursing, counseling or real estate are tied to state licensing. Roles like bookkeeping, writing or IT support usually aren't.
- Time zones and shifts. A job built around Eastern business hours is harder to keep from Hawaii or Japan. Asynchronous work travels best.
- Equipment and internet. Employers often require a wired connection and a private workspace, which can be hard during temporary lodging.

Which official programs help military spouses find remote work?
Four free resources do most of the heavy lifting, and all of them are run by or for the Defense Department. None of them charge spouses a fee; a site that asks you to pay to "unlock" military spouse jobs isn't one of these.
| Resource | What it does | Who it's for | Cost to you |
|---|---|---|---|
| SpouseWorks (formerly SECO) | Career coaching, resume and interview help, education planning | Eligible military spouses | Free |
| MSEP job portal | Job search across employers that committed to hire military spouses | Military spouses | Free |
| MyCAA scholarship | Up to $4,000 for a license, certification or associate degree in a portable field | Spouses of service members in grades E-1 to E-9, W-1 to W-3 and O-1 to O-3 on Title 10 orders | Free; pays tuition and testing fees |
| Federal military spouse hiring authority | Lets agencies hire eligible spouses without the usual competition | Spouses of active-duty members, of 100% disabled members, and un-remarried surviving spouses | Free |
SpouseWorks career coaching
SpouseWorks is the new name for the Spouse Education and Career Opportunities (SECO) program. You book a coach through Military OneSource. Use a session to choose a portable career path before you spend money on a credential, which is the step most people skip.
MSEP
The Military Spouse Employment Partnership connects spouses with employers that have committed to recruiting, hiring and retaining military spouses. Partner employers post on the MSEP job portal. Not every listing is remote, so filter for remote roles and read the location line, as you would on any board.
MyCAA
The My Career Advancement Account scholarship pays up to $4,000 in total, with a cap of $2,000 per fiscal year, for licenses, certifications and associate degrees in portable career fields. Eligibility depends on your sponsor's pay grade and orders, so confirm yours with a coach before you enroll anywhere.
Pick the credential last
Choose the job first, then check two or three real postings for the credential they ask for. MyCAA money goes further when it pays for something employers actually list.
Can military spouses get federal remote jobs?
Yes, and the federal government has tools aimed at spouses, though they don't guarantee a job. Under 5 CFR 315.612, agencies can appoint eligible military spouses noncompetitively, meaning you can be selected without competing against the general applicant pool.
OPM is clear about the limits. The authority gives no hiring preference and no selection priority over other qualified applicants, and agencies aren't required to use it. The FY 2023 National Defense Authorization Act extended the version that covers any spouse of an active-duty member through December 31, 2028.
Remote status matters too. In January 2025 most federal employees were ordered back to in-person work, but OPM's February 12, 2025 memorandum told agencies to let military spouses continue in remote work arrangements and said agencies may continue to appoint military spouses to remote positions, as MOAA reported. The memo covered remote work arrangements specifically; spouses on ordinary telework agreements weren't explicitly included.
On USAJOBS, filter for remote jobs and for the military spouse hiring path, then read each announcement's "who may apply" section. Our guide to where to find remote jobs explains the difference between USAJOBS's remote and telework filters.
Which careers travel best between duty stations?
The best portable careers combine nationwide hiring with little or no state licensing. Here's how common remote fields compare on portability, not on pay.
| Field | Needs a state license? | Portability after a PCS | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Customer support (chat, email, phone) | No | High within the US | Shift times tied to one time zone |
| Bookkeeping and payroll support | No (CPA work does) | High | Client confidentiality and secure setup |
| Writing, editing, content | No | Very high | Income often freelance and uneven |
| Project coordination | No | High | Meetings across time zones |
| IT help desk | No | High | Some roles require a security clearance |
| Medical billing and coding | Certification, not license | High | Employer may restrict states |
| Nursing, counseling, therapy | Yes | Depends on compacts and portability law | Licensed in the state where the client is |
| Teaching (K-12 virtual schools) | Yes | Depends on the state | Many virtual schools hire only state-licensed teachers |
If you have no work history to show, start with roles in our guide to remote jobs with no experience and build from there.
Does your professional license move with you?
Often, yes, if you move on military orders. A federal law, 50 U.S.C. 4025a, says a covered license is treated as valid in the new state for the duration of the orders, at a similar scope of practice, if you:
- Provide a copy of the orders to the licensing authority in the new state.
- Stay in good standing with the authority that issued the license and every other authority that licensed you at a similar scope.
- Accept the new state's authority over standards of practice, discipline and continuing education.
A covered license must also be one you actively used during the two years before the move. According to OneOp, an amendment passed in 2024 gives the new state 30 days to validate the license or issue a temporary one, and law licenses are now covered too. If your profession has an interstate licensure compact, the compact's rules apply instead.
The remote-work catch
The law is about where you move. Licensed remote work, such as telehealth or online counseling, usually must follow the rules of the state where the client is located. Before you take a licensed remote role, ask the employer which states you'd serve and confirm with each state board.
What about remote work during an overseas assignment?
Keeping a US remote job overseas is possible in some cases, but it's the hardest move to plan. Your employer must allow work from that country, and many don't, for tax and data security reasons. Status-of-forces agreements and host-nation rules can also limit or forbid working on the local economy, including remote work for a US company.
Before an OCONUS move:
- Ask your employer in writing whether you may keep working from the new country.
- Ask the installation legal office what the local agreement allows.
- Check time zones, because a 9-to-5 Eastern schedule can mean overnight hours abroad.
Base access, internet speed and power can also differ from what you're used to, so plan your setup before you count on keeping the job.
Scams that target military spouses
Scammers know military spouses move often, look for flexible work and are easy to find in online groups. Treat these as red flags: a "military spouse program" that charges a fee, an offer made entirely by text, a check to buy equipment, or a request for your sponsor's details or your ID before any real interview.
Real programs listed above are free and found through Military OneSource or official .mil and .gov sites. For the full list of warning signs and how to report fraud, see our guide to work from home scams.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best remote job for a military spouse?
The best one is a role you can keep through a PCS move: an employer that hires nationwide, a skill that doesn't depend on a state license, or a license covered by an interstate compact. Customer support, bookkeeping, writing, project coordination and IT support are common examples.
Is MSEP a job board?
It's a partnership between the Defense Department and employers that have committed to recruit, hire and retain military spouses. Spouses search its job portal for free; not every listing is remote, so filter and read the location line.
Do military spouses get hiring preference for federal jobs?
Not under the military spouse authority itself. OPM says it lets agencies hire eligible spouses without competition but gives no hiring preference or selection priority over other qualified applicants.
Can I keep my remote job if we move overseas?
Sometimes, but it isn't automatic. Your employer must allow work from that country, and status-of-forces agreements and host-nation tax rules can restrict it, so ask your employer and the installation legal office before the move.
Does MyCAA pay for a bachelor's degree?
No. MyCAA covers licenses, certifications and associate degrees in portable career fields, up to $4,000 in total.
