How much it costs to sell on Etsy in 2026: the setup fee, listing, transaction and processing fees, Offsite Ads, optional costs and worked examples.

By Updated 8 min read

Quick summary (TL;DR)

  • It costs little to start selling on Etsy: new US shops pay a one-time $15 setup fee and $0.20 per listing, with no required monthly fee, as of 2026.
  • Each sale then costs a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price plus shipping and gift wrap, and payment processing of 3% plus $0.25 in the US, plus $0.20 to renew a multi-quantity listing.
  • On a typical physical order, those fees come to roughly 10% to 11% of what the buyer pays; a sale from Offsite Ads adds 15% for smaller shops, capped at $100.
  • Etsy Ads, Etsy Plus and shipping labels are optional costs, and sellers outside the US face different processing fees and, in some countries, a regulatory operating fee.
  • Materials, packaging, shipping, refunds and taxes usually cost more than Etsy's fees, so price with all of them in mind.

It costs very little to start selling on Etsy: as of 2026, a new US shop pays a one-time $15 setup fee and $0.20 for each listing, with no required monthly fee. The real cost to sell on Etsy comes per sale, where a 6.5% transaction fee and payment processing of 3% plus $0.25 usually take around a tenth of what the buyer pays, and more when a sale comes through Offsite Ads.

Below is every Etsy fee in one place, which ones are optional, how they differ outside the US, and worked examples so you can price with confidence. Etsy changes its fees from time to time, so confirm the current figures on its Fees & Payments Policy before you set prices.

How much does it cost to open an Etsy shop?

Opening an Etsy shop costs a one-time setup fee, $15 for new US shops, plus $0.20 per listing you publish. Etsy's fee help pages say the setup fee is non-refundable, varies by location, is charged in your bank's local currency, and may be waived during promotions.

Each listing then stays live for four months, after which it expires or renews for another $0.20, according to the fees policy.

A realistic first-month budget

Example (hypothetical): a US seller opening a small shop of 10 listings.

10 listingsYes$2.00
Etsy AdsOptionalFrom $1 a day (the minimum budget)
Etsy PlusOptional$10 a month

So the Etsy side of getting started can be under $20. Most of the startup cost is in your product, not the platform. If you're starting with downloads, the cash outlay can be close to zero; our guide to selling digital products shows how to begin with free or low-cost tools.

What fees does Etsy charge when you make a sale?

Every sale triggers a 6.5% transaction fee and a payment processing fee, and sometimes a $0.20 listing renewal. Here's how each works:

  • Transaction fee: 6.5% of the item price plus what you charge for shipping and gift wrapping, per the fees policy. Free shipping doesn't avoid it; it just moves the cost into your price.
  • Payment processing: 3% plus $0.25 for US sellers, charged on the total sale, including shipping and applicable sales tax, according to Etsy's processing fee page.
  • Listing fee on multi-quantity listings: if a listing has several units, Etsy charges $0.20 for each extra unit sold and auto-renews the listing, according to its multiple quantities page. A listing of 10 bowls that all sell costs $0.20 up front plus $1.80.

Etsy also calculates, collects and remits US sales tax in marketplace facilitator states and says it charges no extra administration fee for doing so, per its sales tax help page.

How much does Etsy take from a sale?

On a typical US physical order, Etsy's standard fees come to about 10% to 11% of what the buyer pays; a sale through Offsite Ads roughly doubles that or more.

Example (hypothetical): US seller, US buyer, sales tax left out for simplicity.

OrderListingTransaction (6.5%)Processing (3% + $0.25)Total Etsy feesShare of orderWith Offsite Ads (15%)
$20 item + $5 shipping$0.20$1.63$1.00$2.8311.3%$6.58
$40 item + $8 shipping$0.20$3.12$1.69$5.0110.4%$12.21
$75 item, free shipping$0.20$4.88$2.50$7.5810.1%$18.83

Rounded to the cent. When sales tax applies, processing is a little higher because it's charged on the tax too. Notice the fixed $0.45 per order ($0.20 listing plus $0.25 processing) matters more on cheap items. For the same math on downloads, see the fee table in how to sell digital products on Etsy.

Which Etsy costs are optional?

Etsy Ads, Etsy Plus, Etsy shipping labels and, for smaller shops, Offsite Ads are all optional. Whether they're worth it depends on your margins.

  • Offsite Ads. Etsy advertises listings on other sites and charges only when a buyer clicks and buys within 30 days. Shops that have never made $10,000 in a 365-day period can opt out; above that level it's required at 12%, according to Etsy's help center. If your margins are thin, check whether a 15% fee on some orders still leaves a profit.
  • Etsy Ads. On-site ads charged per click. The minimum daily budget is $1 and you'll never spend over your daily budget, according to Etsy's ads help page. Test small, on listings that already convert.
  • Etsy Plus. $10 a month for 15 listing credits, $5 in Etsy Ads credit and extra shop customization, per Etsy's help page. It pays off mainly if you'd use the credits anyway.
  • Shipping labels. Buying labels through Etsy is convenient, but you can also buy postage elsewhere and compare prices.

Do sellers outside the US pay different Etsy fees?

The setup, listing and transaction fees work the same way, but payment processing rates and some extra fees depend on where your bank account is.

  • Payment processing is a different percentage plus a fixed amount in each country. Check the table in Etsy's processing fee page for yours.
  • Regulatory operating fee. Sellers in some countries pay an extra percentage on the item price and shipping. Etsy's help page lists, for example, 0.48% in the UK, 0.50% in Canada and 1.14% in France, and the fee is subject to VAT where applicable.
  • Currency conversion. If you list in a currency that differs from your payment account's currency, Etsy charges 2.5% on the sale, according to its currency conversion page. Listing in your own currency avoids it.
  • VAT on fees. Depending on your country, VAT or GST may be charged on Etsy's seller fees; check the fees policy for your country.

What costs aren't Etsy fees but still eat your profit?

For physical products, materials and shipping usually cost more than Etsy's fees; for every product, your time is the biggest hidden cost.

  • Materials and packaging, including the ones that go into failed or test pieces.
  • Shipping, whether you charge it separately or build it into the price, plus damaged or lost orders.
  • Photos and mockups, which may mean props, lighting or paid mockup licenses.
  • Refunds and returns. A refund gives back the sale amount; check Etsy's current policy for how fees on refunded orders are treated.
  • Taxes. Your profit is taxable income; in the US, self-employment income of $400 or more generally means filing a return.
  • Your time: designing, listing, answering messages, packing and posting.

If you're deciding whether all of this adds up for you, our honest look at whether selling on Etsy is worth it runs the full math.

How can you keep Etsy fees under control?

You can't avoid the core fees, but you can stop them from surprising you:

  1. Price with fees built in. Work backward from the profit you need per order, including possible Offsite Ads. Our guide on how to price digital products shows a method that also works for physical items.
  2. Raise the order value. Bundles, sets and add-ons spread the fixed $0.45 over more revenue.
  3. Decide on Offsite Ads deliberately. Opt out if a 15% fee would wipe out your margin, and revisit once your prices can absorb it.
  4. List in your payment account's currency to avoid the 2.5% conversion fee.
  5. Prune listings that never sell instead of renewing them every four months.
  6. Track fees monthly in your payment account so you see the real share Etsy takes.

Frequently asked questions

Does it cost money to open an Etsy shop?

Yes, a little. As of 2026, Etsy charges new shops a one-time, non-refundable setup fee of $15 in the US (the amount varies by location and is sometimes waived), plus $0.20 for each listing you publish.

How much does Etsy take from a $20 sale?

Does Etsy charge a monthly fee?

No monthly fee is required. Etsy Plus is an optional subscription at $10 a month that includes listing credits and ad credit, and Etsy Ads are optional and charged per click.
