How Does Printify Work? Pricing, Providers and Setup

How does Printify work? You design, a print provider makes each order, and Printify charges you cost plus shipping. Here's the order flow, plans and fees.

By Updated 9 min read

Quick summary (TL;DR)

  • Printify works as a middleman between your store and a network of independent print providers: you add a design to a product, publish it to your sales channel, and the provider prints and ships each order after a customer buys.
  • Your customer pays you through your store, and Printify separately charges your card, PayPal or Printify Balance for production and shipping; the difference, minus your channel's fees, is your profit.
  • Printify is free to use; as of 2026 the optional Premium plan costs $39 a month or $24.99 a month billed yearly and discounts products by up to 20%.
  • Orders go to production 24 hours after they arrive by default, and you can switch to manual approval, 1 hour, or a set time each day.
  • Printify reprints or refunds damaged and misprinted items reported within 30 days of delivery, but wrong sizes and change-of-mind returns are your cost.

Printify works by connecting your online store to a network of independent print providers: you put a design on a product, publish it to a sales channel like Etsy or Shopify, and when a customer buys, a provider prints and ships that one item for you. So how does Printify work for your money? Your customer pays you, Printify separately charges you the production and shipping cost, and you keep the difference minus your channel's fees.

For most products, Printify doesn't do the printing; independent providers in its network do. Printify is the software and marketplace in the middle, and it earns its margin inside the product price you pay, per its pricing page. This guide walks through the order flow, how providers and payments work, what the plans cost as of 2026, and the settings to check before your first sale.

How does Printify work, step by step?

Every Printify sale runs through the same loop, and you only need to set it up once per product.

  1. Create a free account. Printify's home page says no credit card is needed to start, though you'll add a payment method before any order can be produced.
  2. Pick a product from the catalog. Printify lists more than 2,000 products across 141 production facilities, as of 2026.
  3. Choose a print provider for that product. This is the step that makes Printify different, and it's covered in the next section.
  4. Add your design in the free product creator and check the mockups.
  5. Set your retail price and publish the listing to your connected store.
  6. A customer buys in your store and pays your price plus any shipping you charge.
  7. The order imports to Printify, which charges you for production and shipping and sends it to the provider.
  8. The provider prints and ships, and tracking syncs back to your store.

You never touch inventory. You do own everything the customer sees: the listing, the price, the photos, and the replies when something goes wrong. If you want the bigger picture of where Printify fits among other routes, our print on demand guide for beginners lays out the whole business model.

How do Printify print providers work?

A print provider is an independent printing company in Printify's network that makes and ships your product; you choose one per product, and that choice decides your cost, quality and speed.

Printify's help center lists what differs between providers: location, product price, shipping rates and methods, available colors and sizes, print area sizes, printing equipment, and extras like packaging inserts. Two providers can print the same blank shirt and still produce different colors, because each tunes its own process.

How to read the Performance Score

Each provider has a Performance Score from 0 to 10, shown on the product page and updated weekly from the previous four weeks of data. It blends three things: quality (how many items fail standards or get issue reports), production speed against agreed time frames, and samples and shipping.

A high score helps you shortlist. It doesn't replace a sample of your own design.

What happens if a provider runs out of stock?

By default, your chosen provider fulfills the order, using its closest facility when it has more than one. You can opt in to two features that change this:

  • Order Routing moves an order to another provider if your product is unavailable or the buyer is in another region. The price can rise, up to a limit you set.
  • Printify Choice works as a network that picks the nearest suitable provider for you at a set price, but you won't see which provider made the item.

For a full comparison of this network model against a company that prints in-house, see our Printful vs Printify breakdown.

How does Printify charge you?

Printify can't take money from your store's sales, so every order involves two separate payments: your customer pays you, and you pay Printify.

Printify charges your linked card, PayPal or Printify Balance (a prepaid wallet) for the product and shipping. Any balance is used first, and the rest goes to your card. You'll then get your customer's money whenever Etsy, Shopify or your other channel pays out, which can be days later. That timing gap is why you need some cash on hand, even with no inventory.

Here is Printify's own help-center example for a mug, in US dollars:

StepWhat happensAmount
Customer pays you$8.98 retail plus $6.09 shipping plus $1.67 tax$16.74
You pay Printify$4.09 production plus $6.09 shipping$10.18
Left in your store accountBefore your channel's fees$4.89

Notice what the example leaves out: Etsy or Shopify fees, payment processing and any ads. Your real take is lower, which is why our guide to print on demand profit margins walks through pricing after every fee.

When does the charge happen?

You're charged when an order is sent to production, and your order approval setting controls when that is:

  • Manual: nothing is produced until you click Submit order.
  • Automatically in 1 hour.
  • Automatically in 24 hours: the default.
  • Automatically at a set time each day: one daily charge in your time zone.

The delay gives you a window to fix an address or cancel before payment. Pop-Up Store orders skip these settings and are charged as soon as they arrive.

What about sales tax?

As of 2026, Printify collects sales tax on orders delivered to most US states and territories, unless you've submitted a valid resale certificate before ordering. Its help center lists Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon as states where it doesn't collect. Sellers outside the US should check the taxes section of the Printify help center for their region.

How much does Printify cost?

Printify is free to use; you pay only for products and shipping when orders come in. The paid plan is optional and only lowers product prices.

PlanPrice (as of 2026)StoresMain benefit
Free$0Up to 5Unlimited designs, all main integrations
Premium$39 a month, or $24.99 a month billed yearlyUp to 10Up to 20% off all products, up to 33% off new products
EnterpriseCustom quoteUnlimitedExtra discounts, custom API work, account manager

A few cost details beginners miss:

  • No free samples. Printify says samples are ordered at regular pricing.
  • Premium is non-refundable. You can cancel anytime, but you must do it before the renewal date to avoid the next charge.
  • Billing currency. Printify's pricing page says cards are charged in USD, EUR, CAD, GBP or AUD.

Premium pays off only when your monthly product savings exceed the fee. Our Printful vs Printify comparison includes a worked break-even example, so we won't repeat it here.

Where can you sell with Printify?

Printify connects to the major marketplaces and store builders, and it also offers its own free storefront.

As of 2026, its integrations page lists:

  • Marketplaces: Etsy, TikTok Shop (US only), eBay and Amazon.
  • Store builders: Shopify, Squarespace, Wix, WooCommerce, Big Cartel, PrestaShop and BigCommerce.
  • Printify API for custom stores.
  • Printify Pop-Up Store, a shareable store with no website needed.

The Pop-Up Store works differently from every other channel. Printify collects the customer's payment, pays for production and shipping, handles customer support, and transfers your earnings to your bank through Stripe once you've verified your account. That makes it a low-effort way to start, but you're relying on your own audience for traffic.

Etsy is the most common pairing for beginners. Its rules for production partners and its fees are covered in our Etsy print on demand guide.

What happens when an order goes wrong?

Printify offers a free reprint or refund when an item arrives damaged or misprinted, if you report it within 30 calendar days of delivery with a clear photo. Anything else is generally your problem to solve with the customer.

What's covered and what isn't, per Printify's help center as of 2026:

  • Covered: damage and manufacturing errors. You don't need to return the item.
  • Not covered: wrong size, wrong color chosen by the buyer, or a change of mind.
  • Tolerance: for DTG, DTF, embroidery and all-over print, a print placed within half an inch of the intended spot isn't counted as a defect.
  • Lost packages: if an order isn't delivered within 30 days (domestic US or regional EU) or 45 days (international), report it within a week to be eligible.

Two mechanics matter. Refunds go to your Printify Balance, not to your customer, so you also refund the customer yourself in your store. And since the customer only knows your shop, every complaint lands with you first.

Can you brand Printify orders?

Partly. Printify supports packaging inserts, gift message cards, printed neck labels and sleeve prints, but only with providers that offer each feature. Your store name and ship-from address appear on every shipping label, and Printify says store names must be 30 characters or fewer.

What should you set up before your first sale?

A short checklist prevents most early refunds and surprise charges.

  1. Order a sample of each product from the exact provider you'll use, and judge it as a buyer would.
  2. Start with manual approval for your first orders, so you can check each one before you pay.
  3. Add a payment method or top up your balance so orders don't stall.
  4. Price after every fee, not just Printify's base cost and shipping.
  5. Set honest delivery times in your store: provider production time plus shipping to your main buyer country.
  6. Read the provider's size chart and copy it into your listing to cut wrong-size orders.

Example (hypothetical): you sell 20 shirts a month on the free plan. On manual approval, you'd review roughly one order a day, a few minutes each, while you learn which provider and settings work. Once orders are steady, switching to the 24-hour default saves that time.

Results with Printify depend on your designs, niche, pricing and marketing. The platform handles production; it doesn't bring you buyers.

Next steps

Now that you know how Printify works, decide whether it fits you, then pick one product and one channel to start.

Frequently asked questions

Do you pay Printify before or after a customer pays you?

After the customer orders, but usually before your sales channel pays you out. Printify charges your card, PayPal or Printify Balance when the order is sent to production, while Etsy or Shopify pays you on its own schedule.

Is Printify free to use?

Yes. The free plan has no monthly fee and covers up to 5 stores and unlimited designs. You pay only the product and shipping cost when an order comes in, plus any taxes.

Does Printify ship directly to my customers?

Yes. The print provider ships straight to your customer with your store name and ship-from address on the label, and tracking syncs back to your sales channel.

Do I need a store to use Printify?

No. Printify's free Pop-Up Store gives you a shareable storefront, and in that case Printify takes the payment, handles customer support and sends your earnings to your bank through Stripe.

Does Printify give free samples?

No. Printify's help center says samples are ordered at regular pricing, and Premium subscribers get their normal plan discount but no extra sample discount.
