Etsy Dropshipping: What Etsy Allows and What It Bans

Etsy dropshipping is banned except for craft and party supplies. What Etsy counts as reselling, how production partners differ, and the compliant options.

By Updated 7 min read

Quick summary (TL;DR)

  • Etsy dropshipping is not allowed for ready-made goods; Etsy's only stated exception is craft and party supplies.
  • Etsy defines dropshipping as selling ready-made products shipped by a third-party supplier without any alteration or customization by the seller, and adding a personalized note to an unaltered item does not change that.
  • Production partners, including print-on-demand services, are allowed only for items made from your own original designs or the buyer's customization, and they must be disclosed.
  • Etsy says sourcing from wholesalers, white-label, OEM or ODM manufacturers violates its reselling rules and may lead to penalties up to and including account suspension.

Etsy dropshipping is not allowed for ready-made products: Etsy's help center says drop shipping is not permitted, with the limited exception of craft and party supplies. If you list commercially available goods and have a supplier ship them straight to your buyer, you are breaking Etsy's rules, even if you add a personal note.

What Etsy does allow is a different model that often gets confused with dropshipping: using a production partner, such as a print-on-demand service, to make and ship items from your own designs. This guide explains exactly where Etsy draws that line, what counts as reselling, what happens to shops that cross it and what the compliant alternatives are.

Is dropshipping allowed on Etsy?

No, except for craft and party supplies. As of 2026, Etsy's help center states that drop shipping is not allowed, with that one limited exception, which it explains as supplies that support makers and events.

The reason is Etsy's whole marketplace rule: everything listed must be made, designed, handpicked or sourced by the seller, and reselling mass-produced items is not allowed. A generic product shipped from a supplier fits none of those categories.

That makes Etsy different from marketplaces that tolerate dropshipping with conditions, such as eBay with wholesale suppliers. If you want to dropship ready-made products, Etsy is the wrong venue, and our step-by-step dropshipping guide shows how to do it on your own store instead.

What does Etsy count as dropshipping and reselling?

Etsy gives its own definitions, and they are narrower than many sellers assume.

  • Drop shipping, per Etsy, is selling ready-made products shipped directly from a third-party supplier to the customer, without any alteration or customization by the seller.
  • Reselling is selling a commercially available item that the seller did not make or design.

Examples Etsy says are not allowed

Etsy lists these as prohibited drop shipping and reselling:

  1. Selling items commercially available from retailers or wholesalers, except craft or party supplies.
  2. Adding a card, gift tag or note to an otherwise unaltered commercial item, such as a resold necklace with a personalized note.
  3. Selling gift baskets that are entirely resold or drop shipped, rather than items the seller selected and creatively packaged into a new set.
  4. Selling handicrafts or fair trade items that the seller did not make or design.

Example 2 closes the most common loophole. A personal touch on the packaging does not turn a supplier's product into your own.

What can you sell on Etsy without making it yourself?

More than people think, but each route has conditions. Etsy's "What can I sell" guidance groups allowed items into four categories.

Etsy categoryWhat it coversDo you have to make it?Dropshipping allowed?
Made by a sellerItems made by hand or with tools like a 3D printer, CNC or CricutYesNo
Designed by a sellerYour original designs as downloads or produced by a partner; includes seller-prompted AI creations, which must be disclosedYou design itThrough a disclosed production partner only
Handpicked by a sellerVintage items at least 20 years old, items from nature, curated collectionsNoNot as a supplier-shipped ready-made product
Sourced by a sellerCraft supplies, party decorations, items personalized with the buyer's own text or imageNo, for suppliesCraft and party supplies only

Etsy also allows gift baskets when they are made of items you selected and packaged into a new, unique set. Fully resold baskets are not allowed.

The craft supply exception in practice

If you want to use a supplier-ships model on Etsy, craft and party supplies are the stated opening: beads, fabric, crafting tools, party decorations. Read Etsy's Creativity Standards for the exact boundaries before you list, because a "supply" that is really a finished product will not qualify.

How are production partners different from dropshipping suppliers?

A production partner physically produces items based on your own original designs, from start to finish. A dropshipping supplier sells you products that already exist. Etsy allows the first and bans the second.

Etsy's help center gives examples of qualifying partners: print-on-demand services such as Printful, Printify and Gooten, cut-and-sew manufacturers, contract manufacturers producing to your specifications, and specialized services like laser cutting.

Who does not qualify

Etsy is explicit that these are not production partners:

  • White-label manufacturers that produce standard products you brand as your own without significant design input.
  • Original equipment manufacturers (OEM) and original design manufacturers (ODM) whose products are sold or rebranded by others.
  • Commercial retailers and wholesalers selling ready-made products for resale.
  • Materials suppliers for your raw craft materials or tools.

So putting your logo on a supplier's catalog item does not make it yours. If the design input is not significant, it is reselling.

Disclosure is required

Etsy requires sellers who use production partners to disclose them on the relevant listings, and buyers can see that information in your shop's About section. You add partners in Shop Manager under Settings. Production partners cannot be added to supplies or vintage items. For the full setup of a print-on-demand shop, including fees, see our guide to Etsy print on demand.

What happens if Etsy catches a dropshipper?

Etsy says it may review and remove any listings that violate its policies, and anyone can report a listing that appears to break them. Its production partner guidance is stricter: working with non-qualifying businesses to source products may result in penalties up to and including account suspension.

In practice, the risk compounds. Etsy shops are built on reviews and listing history, so losing listings or the shop means losing the main asset you were building. Dropshipped items also tend to have longer delivery times and generic photos, which invite buyer complaints and reports from other sellers.

Approach on EtsyAllowed?Main risk

Supplier items with a personal note addedNoSame as above; Etsy names this example
Your own designs made by a disclosed POD partnerYesDesign infringement, partner delivery times
Craft or party supplies shipped by a supplierYesMust genuinely be supplies
Vintage items 20 or more years oldYesAccurate age and condition descriptions
White-label product with your logoNoEtsy counts it as reselling

What are the compliant alternatives?

If your goal is to sell without holding much stock, you have three legitimate routes.

  1. Print on demand on Etsy. Create original designs and let a disclosed partner print and ship them. This stays within Etsy's rules and keeps you on its marketplace.
  2. Dropship on your own store. Your own store has no reselling ban; you follow payment provider rules and consumer law instead. Our comparison of the best dropshipping platforms covers the options.
  3. Use a marketplace that permits it. eBay allows dropshipping from wholesale suppliers under strict conditions; see eBay dropshipping rules before you list there.

Whichever you choose, you remain responsible for delivery times, returns and the accuracy of every listing. Results depend on your product, design and effort, and most new shops earn little at first.

Next steps

Etsy dropshipping of ready-made goods breaks Etsy's rules; only craft and party supplies are an exception. Original designs made by a disclosed production partner are allowed, and so are vintage and curated items within Etsy's definitions.

Frequently asked questions

Can you dropship on Etsy?

Only in narrow cases. Etsy says drop shipping is not allowed, with the limited exception of craft and party supplies. Selling ready-made items shipped straight from a supplier is prohibited.

Is print on demand on Etsy considered dropshipping?

No, as long as the design is yours. Etsy treats print-on-demand services as production partners, allowed when items are your original design or the buyer's customization, and you must disclose the partner.

Can I sell AliExpress products on Etsy?

Not as ready-made products. Etsy prohibits selling items that are commercially available from retailers or wholesalers, except craft or party supplies, and personalizing only the packaging or note does not make them eligible.

What happens if Etsy finds out I am dropshipping?

Etsy may review and remove listings that break its policies. Its production partner guidance says sourcing from non-qualifying businesses may result in penalties up to and including account suspension.

Can I sell vintage items I did not make?

Yes. Etsy's handpicked category includes vintage items that are at least 20 years old. Reselling vintage is one of the exceptions to its reselling ban.
