Amazon Associates: How It Works and How to Join

Amazon Associates is Amazon's affiliate program: you share special links to products on Amazon, and you earn a fixed percentage, set by product category, when people buy through them. As of 2026, Amazon Associates rates range from 0% to 10% depending on the category, and joining is free.

It's the program most beginners try first, because almost every niche has products on Amazon and shoppers already trust the checkout. This guide explains how the program works, what it pays, how to join and pass the first review, and the rules that close accounts.

How does Amazon Associates work?

You join through Associates Central, create links to products, and publish them in your content. When someone clicks and buys, Amazon records the sale and credits you a commission.

The key mechanics, from Amazon's help center:

• 24-hour window. You earn on qualifying items added to the customer's cart within 24 hours of their arrival at Amazon through your link.
• Cart extension. If the item was added in that 24-hour window, you still earn if the order is placed before the cart expires, usually after 90 days.
• Window ends early if the customer completes an order or returns to Amazon through another Associate's link.
• Other items count too. Qualifying items added in the window can earn, not only the product you linked.

The short window is why Amazon rewards content that catches people close to a purchase decision, such as comparisons and "best X for Y" guides, rather than general inspiration.

How much does Amazon Associates pay?

Amazon pays a fixed percentage of the sale by category. Here is a summary of its Standard Commission Income Rates as of 2026; the full table lists more categories.

Amazon also caps some categories; for example, commission on fine art is limited per product. Rates change from time to time, so check the official rate page before planning content around a category. How do you join Amazon Associates?

Joining is free and takes one sitting. Getting fully approved takes sales.

1. Prepare your platform. Amazon says it looks for sites with "well-built, original, and established content". Publish useful content first.
2. Apply through Associates Central. List every website, app or social account where you'll use links, and describe your audience and traffic.
3. Add tax and payment details. You'll complete a tax interview and choose a payment method.
4. Add the required disclosure. The Operating Agreement requires the statement "As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases" to appear clearly and prominently on your site.
5. Start sharing links in helpful content.

What is the 3 sales in 180 days rule?

Amazon's help center says that once you apply, you have 180 days to refer a sale, and after you refer three qualifying sales it evaluates your application, usually within a day or two. If there aren't enough qualifying sales in 180 days, your application can be withdrawn.

Two practical points:

• The sales must be genuine. Amazon prohibits buying through your own links or asking friends, relatives, employees or business contacts to do so. Using them to hit the three-sale target risks the account.
• Rejection is hard to undo. Amazon says it can't reinstate an account or Associates ID once rejected. Build content first, then apply, so the 180-day clock runs while you have something worth reading.

How and when does Amazon Associates pay you?

You choose a payment method in your account. Amazon's help pages set these thresholds:

• Direct deposit or gift card: commissions under $10 roll into the next month; you can't change this threshold.
• Check: the minimum check threshold is $100, and you can set a higher one.
• Threshold changes must be submitted by the first day of the payment month to apply that month.

Your earnings report can change as orders are canceled or returned, so expect some difference between early figures and your final payout.

What are the Amazon Associates rules you must follow?

Amazon's Operating Agreement (most recently revised in 2025 when we checked) and Program Policies (revised in April 2026) are long, but a few rules cause most problems:

• Disclose. The required Amazon statement on your site, plus clear disclosure near links as the FTC expects.
• No self-purchases or friends-and-family purchases through your links.
• No incentives. You can't offer money, rebates, points, donations or any other reward for using your links.
• Don't obscure links. No cloaking, and no link shorteners that make it unclear the link goes to Amazon.
• No offline or ebook links. Links can't be used in printed material, ebooks, mailings or oral solicitations. Emails and direct messages are allowed only if recipients opted in.
• Prices and ratings. Show prices and availability only through links Amazon serves or its APIs, and don't copy customer reviews or star ratings except through its APIs.
• No trademark bidding. Paid search ads on Amazon's trademarks that link directly to Amazon are prohibited.

Amazon Associates in the UK, Canada and Australia

Amazon runs separate Associates programs for its marketplaces, including amazon.co.uk, amazon.ca and amazon.com.au. Each has its own account, rate table, payment terms and disclosure requirements, and commissions are earned on the marketplace your link points to.

If most of your audience is in the UK, for example, the UK program usually makes more sense than the US one. Your local advertising rules still apply too: in the UK, the ASA expects affiliate content to be labelled clearly and upfront.

Is Amazon Associates worth it for beginners?

It's a reasonable first program if your niche involves physical products, but it's rarely the whole business.

Many affiliates use Amazon for everyday recommendations and add a specialist program with better economics for their niche. A sensible test: if your best content recommends products in 1% to 3% categories, work out what a month of realistic sales would pay before you commit years of content to Amazon alone.
