Alibaba Dropshipping: How It Works and What to Check

Alibaba dropshipping works through suppliers who ship single orders. How it differs from AliExpress, what MOQs and Trade Assurance mean, and what to check.

By Updated 7 min read

Quick summary (TL;DR)

  • Alibaba dropshipping means using Alibaba.com suppliers who agree to ship single orders to your customers, usually through Alibaba's dropshipping section or a connected store app.
  • Alibaba is a business-to-business marketplace built around bulk orders and minimum order quantities, while AliExpress sells ready-made items to consumers one at a time.
  • Trade Assurance only protects orders placed and paid through Alibaba.com; paying a supplier directly by bank transfer gives up that protection.
  • Order samples, check supplier verification, agree on shipping terms and price in US import duties, which have applied to low-value shipments since 2025 (effective August 29).

Alibaba dropshipping means selling products in your own store and having an Alibaba.com supplier ship each order straight to your customer. It works only with suppliers who agree to fulfill single orders, because Alibaba is mainly a business-to-business marketplace where most listings assume bulk buying.

That detail changes everything about how you use it. This guide explains how Alibaba differs from AliExpress, what minimum order quantities and Trade Assurance really mean for a small store, and what to check before a single customer order goes out. If you need the basics of the model first, see what dropshipping is and how it works.

Can you dropship from Alibaba?

Yes, through suppliers who accept single orders. Shopify's guide to Alibaba describes a dedicated dropshipping portal where you can connect your store and find suppliers "open to fulfilling individual orders," which removes the usual minimum order requirement.

There are two ways sellers use Alibaba, and only the first is dropshipping in the strict sense:

  1. Dropshipping-ready suppliers. You list their products, orders sync from your store, and the supplier ships one unit at a time.
  2. Bulk buying for later. Once a product sells, you order stock in bulk and ship it from your home or a fulfillment warehouse. That lowers unit cost but means holding inventory.

Many stores test with the first route and move to the second only after demand is proven. If you want the full sequence of a store build, from product to launch, our step-by-step dropshipping guide puts Alibaba in context.

Alibaba vs AliExpress: what's the difference?

The two sites serve different buyers. Shopify's guide puts it simply: Alibaba is primarily for business-to-business transactions, while AliExpress is designed for consumers.

The practical takeaway: AliExpress is easier for a first test, and Alibaba becomes more useful once you know which product deserves better pricing, custom packaging or a private label.

What are MOQs and how do they affect dropshipping?

A minimum order quantity (MOQ) is the smallest order a supplier will accept for a product, set per listing. Shopify's guide shows an example listing where "the minimum order is 100 units," which is typical of the bulk side of Alibaba.

For dropshipping, an MOQ above one means the supplier is not dropshipping-ready, at least not on standard terms. You have three options:

  • Filter for single-order suppliers in Alibaba's dropshipping section.
  • Ask. Some suppliers will ship individual orders or a sample on request, sometimes at a higher unit price.
  • Wait. Keep the supplier on your list for when a product has steady sales and a bulk order makes sense.

The bulk-order trap

A low price per unit at a high MOQ looks like a better margin, but unsold stock is money you cannot get back. Example (hypothetical): 100 units at $6 each is $600 tied up before a single sale, plus freight and duties. If the product stalls, that cash is gone. Test with single orders first.

What does Trade Assurance protect?

Trade Assurance is Alibaba.com's built-in order protection. Alibaba says it lets you claim a refund if your order has not been shipped, goes missing, or arrives with defects, incorrect items, damage or other product-related issues, and it promotes delay compensation when a delivery handled through its logistics service misses the scheduled date. Some extras, such as free local returns, apply only in select countries.

The condition that matters most: protection depends on paying through Alibaba.com. Alibaba presents payment through the platform as the step that activates its protections. If a supplier asks you to pay by direct bank transfer or another off-platform method, that order is outside Trade Assurance.

Payment routeRisk level for youWhy
Alibaba.com checkout with Trade AssuranceLowerPlatform protection and a dispute route
PayPal, where offeredLowerBuyer protection from the payment provider
Direct bank transfer or money transfer serviceHighHard to recover if the supplier fails to deliver

Shopify's Alibaba guide rates bank transfers and Western Union as high risk without escrow. A supplier who pushes you off the platform is a warning sign in itself.

How do you vet an Alibaba supplier?

Start with the signals Alibaba gives you, then confirm them with a real order. Our general method for choosing the best dropshipping suppliers applies here; these checks are specific to Alibaba.

Check verification and the type of business

Look for verification badges on the supplier profile. Shopify's guide explains that verified suppliers are confirmed to hold the necessary paperwork and licensing, with audits that can cover quality processes, certifications and customs records. Also check whether you are dealing with a manufacturer or a trading company. Both can be fine, but a trading company adds a layer between you and the factory.

Order samples from more than one supplier

Shopify's guide recommends getting samples to verify quality before committing money. Order the same product from two or three suppliers, time each delivery to your main market and compare:

  • Build quality against the listing photos.
  • Packaging, including whether it shows supplier branding or prices.
  • Delivery time and tracking, from order to doorstep.
  • Communication speed when you ask a follow-up question.

Watch for red flags

Shopify's guide warns against suppliers who make "fantastical" shipping promises or whose prices are far below every competitor. Add to that: refusing samples, vague answers about lead times, and pressure to pay outside the platform.

What about shipping, duties and Incoterms?

Shipping terms decide who pays for what between the factory and your customer, and they can quietly erase your margin.

Incoterms in plain English

Alibaba quotes often use standard trade terms. Two ends of the range matter most:

  • EXW (Ex Works): the lowest price, but you arrange and pay for everything from the factory door.
  • DDP (Delivered Duty Paid): the highest price, but the seller handles shipping, customs and duties.

For a beginner dropshipper, a quote that includes delivery to the customer and import duties is far easier to price than one that leaves those to you.

US import duties

In 2025 (effective August 29), US Customs and Border Protection ended duty-free de minimis treatment for low-value imports, so shipments under $800 no longer enter duty-free by default. Ask every supplier whether their price includes duties for US delivery, and recheck your margin if it does not. Sellers in the UK, Canada and Australia should check their own country's import rules, which differ.

A step-by-step path from first message to first order

  1. Shortlist products using clear criteria; our guide to finding winning dropshipping products has a scoring method.
  2. Search Alibaba's dropshipping section for suppliers that ship single orders.
  3. Message three suppliers with the same questions: single-order shipping, delivery time to your country, packaging, returns and duties.
  4. Order samples and time the delivery.
  5. Connect the winning supplier to your store and place a real test order to your own address.
  6. Set delivery promises from your measured times plus a buffer.
  7. Keep payments on the platform so Trade Assurance applies.
  8. Revisit bulk pricing only after the product sells consistently.

Next steps

Alibaba dropshipping is workable when you use suppliers who ship single orders, pay through the platform, measure real delivery times and price in duties. It is risky when it starts with a bulk order and a bank transfer to a supplier you have never tested. Results depend on your product, supplier and execution, and most new stores earn little at first.

Frequently asked questions

Can you dropship from Alibaba?

Yes, with suppliers who agree to fulfill single orders. Shopify's guide to Alibaba describes a dedicated dropshipping portal that connects stores to suppliers open to individual orders, so you are not bound by the usual minimums.

Is Alibaba or AliExpress better for dropshipping?

AliExpress is simpler for testing because it sells single items to consumers. Alibaba suits sellers who want to negotiate with manufacturers, customize products or move to bulk stock once a product proves itself.

Does Trade Assurance cover dropshipping orders?

It covers orders placed and paid through Alibaba.com. Alibaba says it lets you claim a refund if an order is not shipped, goes missing or arrives defective, incorrect or damaged. Payments made outside the platform are not protected.

What is a good MOQ for a beginner?

For testing, the best MOQ is one unit, which is what dropshipping-ready suppliers offer. Once a product sells steadily, a small bulk order can lower your unit cost, but only buy stock you can afford to keep if sales stop.

How much do Alibaba samples cost?

It varies by supplier and product, and shipping often costs more than the item. Ask for the sample price and delivery cost in writing, and treat it as part of your testing budget.
